The alteration spell sound is following me!

Ok,

After downloading the Roberts Male Body v5 mod, and the Anthro Dragon mod, every time i start a new game, the ranged alteration sound (when it collides with a door or oblect), sounds off every half-second. All the way through the game.

I was just wondering if anyone had experienced this before, or if anyone could shine some light if it's the mod or if its the game. And if so, if the could help me stop it.

Thanks, sorry for needing so much help.

Are those the only two mods you're using? Post your load order. I had a similar problem when I tried to use Reneer's Corpse Mod and Supreme Magicka. Do you have flashing purple lights around your character every time this sound plays? RCM uses scripts that SM also uses, but SM attaches sounds and flashing lights to them, so oops. Maybe this Anthro Dragon mod does something similar involving the alteration hitting the door sound. I use Robert's Male body, and female, and I can tell you that mod is not responsible.

You could always rename a silent .wav file to the same name the alteration hitting the door sound uses, and put it in your Data folder in the correct place. This will cause the sound to not play, ever, and you would have to research where, in the Sounds.bsa, the sound is. Use BSA Commander to unpack it, and then search through until you find it. The filenames and folders are pretty self explanatory.

Oh, and don't let people make you feel bad about needing a lot of help. Those are usually the kind of people who enjoy the challenge of troubleshooting and researching a problem like this. Hats off to them, they're awesome for that, but then there are people like me, and maybe you, who don't particularly enjoy it because art and creativity are fun and rewarding, and numbers and data structures are not, and life's too short to spend all afternoon fighting with the computer when we're tired and just want to unwind in the evening with an uncooperative game. (Nobody here will make you feel bad, but I get the feeling you've been made to feel guilty about not figuring it out for yourself before. I know I have.)

I'm glad to help walk you through it, but remember, if you do this method you will never hear the sound during game, even when you're supposed to. This is a quick and dirty method of fixing the problem. I recommend you do the old trick of deactivating all your mods until you find the culprit. The Anthro Dragon Race could very easily be the culprit. However, here's how to do the file replace:

First you will need a silent .wav file. It has to be .wav, not .mp3.

This mod, which I recommend for general use anyway, has a silent .wav file.

The way this mod works is the exact same thing we will be doing here. This mod corrects the highly annoying loud wind sound effect that plays during storms, by replacing it with a silent .wav. There's no .esp involved, because if you put it in the right place, the game will use it instead of the sound it is supposed to use. The way it works is, the game looks first in your data folder for whatever it needs, and if it finds something, like this silent file, it uses it. If it doesn't find anything, it looks at the .bsa. This simple file "replace" is very nice because you aren't really messing with the game at all and if you want the regular thing back, you just delete the one in your Data folder.

After you have your silent .wav file, it's time to put it in the right place. You can find out the right place by unpacking the sounds.bsa file into a different directory, like Oblivionbsa. What you will find when you do this is the same exact folder structure as your Data folder.

Use this to unpack it.

Now, you don't actually have to do that now. I'm going to tell you where to put it. But I thought you might like to play around with this program and learn how the game's files work. Remember, if you unpack it, you can mess with it all you want, because it merely copied the contents of the .bsa, it didn't actually mess with the .bsa. The game's files are still unharmed and sitting pretty in the regular .bsa's. Just don't delete those bsa's.

I unpacked Sounds.bsa, and it turns out I was wrong about the folder names being self explanatory. I found your file though. I think!

Here's what you need to do:

Open up the zip file for the silent storms, and navigate through the folders until you find the .wav file.

Extract it to your desktop, loose. Don't worry about the folders. That's only if you want the silent storms.

Rename it to spl_alteration_hit .

Now make this folder structure in your Data folder: sound/fx/spl

Drop the renamed .wav into the spl folder.

Play the game and see if it still plays. I could be wrong about the exact sound you need to fix, but I think that's the one you described.

Remember, it's better to find out which mod is making it play all the time, rather than do this, but this will stop it from playing, even when it's supposed to. What will be happening is, it will be playing this silent file, all the time. This could cause performance issues. Just letting you know. It's a very rough way of solving the problem.

There's also the chance that you're actually not hearing the alteration spell hit sound itself, but the same file in a different use. This would be the fault of a mod, and the above method will not fix anything if that's the case. Let me know what happens.

I had this annoying sound when I installed the newer version of Companion Share and Recruit. If you did install this mod then search for the sound fix for it (rather than 'CSR Sound Fix' I believe it's named 'CRS Sound Fix', so the person making the fix switched the letters around). Unless the sound fix is now already included in the latest update of CSR.
