Problem with Smoothing Armor

I edited the cuirass in Cinema 4D and it looked normal. Then I exported to blender (obj format) and it turned to flat faces. When I try to add Smooth or Subsurf the mesh separates.

 

how can I make it smooth again or keep it smooth when importing to Blender?

 

Below is what is happening. First pic is the mesh in Cinema 4D, second is the mesh imported into Blender, third is mesh with Smooth modifier. Subsurf result looks kinda the same as Smooth result.

 

EDIT: I have gotten used to Blender again. I had a class that was all about Blender and I forgot how to use it since then. Figured it out just now and made a new cuirass inside of blender instead of in Cinema 4D.
