crashing upon saving

Hey all, I recently got my Steam Version of Fallout 3 GOTY running (after about a week of poking it with a stick) and have come across a new issue.

dunno if this is a common thing or not (I managed to find one relevant topic on the wide internet after searching using various terms) but any time I try to save my game it crashes. this goes for regular "menu> save game> new save" as well as for quick saves
I haven't bothered with auto saving for fear of file corruption.

I'm hoping you'll be able to help me. Here's some info:

Operating System: Windows 8 64-bit (6.2, Build 9200) (9200.win8_gdr.140502-1507)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: 700-056
BIOS: 80.34
Processor: AMD A10-6700 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 12288MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 11462MB RAM
Page File: 5628MB used, 6232MB available
Windows Dir: C:\windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled
DxDiag Version: 6.02.9200.16384 32bit Unicode

More Generally:

I can run it on ultra with hardly noticeable issues and I don't have issues with more current games so I know it's not a problem with my hardware or specs or w/e

There was one 'fix' that worked for a few minutes, and that was to load the same save file twice before saving. it doesn't work anymore.

I modified the .ini file so it uses only 2 cores instead of 4 or whatever, didn't fix it.
I also downloaded the 3gb enabler which didn't fix it. I didn't mess with the... is it called the Boot.ini? because I'm using windows 8 64 bit.

As far as I've read, the 64 bit automatically has the 3gb large file whatever thing activated. do I still have to restart my computer for it to take effect with fallout 3?

I apologize for my lack of proper terminology, I'm not the most tech savvy person in the world. If there's anything else you need to know, please ask directly.
Thanks in advance.

update: it will randomly not crash upon saving. If I can get it to save once, it'll save without crashing anywhere no issues. but if I can't get it that one time at the beginning, I'm out of luck.

any kind of explanation for this? I thought saving in small places would make it easier but that is also hit or miss.

I was told that loading a save file twice in a row would help, it did a couple of times but I guess I used up the magic of that because it doesn't work anymore.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ah yes I did miss that bit
I am using mods

Load order is:

Fallout3.esm
Angorage.esm
ThePitt.esm
BrokenSteel.esm
PointLookout.esm
Zeta.esm
CALIBR.esm
FOOK2 - Main.esm
FOOK2 - [DIK] DLC Improvement Kit.esm
Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow.esm
FOOK2 - Main.esp
FOOK2 - [DIK] DLC Improvement Kit.esp
FOOK2 - Main [Hotfix].esp
FOOK2 - DIK [Hotfix].esp
Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow in Fallout.esp
Enhanced Weather - REBOOT.esp
Enhanced Weather - Weather Sounds in Interiors.esp
Enhanced Weather - Sneak Bonus during Storms.esp
Fellout-full.esp

Looking at it, I wonder if it's all of these .esm .esp copies
though with different extensions, maybe not?
I'm uncertain. I'm not very savvy with mods yet. just starting out.

I'm not familiar with Loot... I'm assuming that's the Load Order Report, in which case, no, I don't get that sort of message.

load order comes back with this:

Mod load order report
! Warning: current load order template contains 19 duplicate entries

Fallout3.esm
Masterlist Information: $Revision$, $Date$, $LastChangedBy$

Anchorage.esm

ThePitt.esm

BrokenSteel.esm

PointLookout.esm

Zeta.esm

CALIBR.esm

FOOK2 - Main.ESM

FOOK2 - [DIK] DLC Improvement Kit.ESM

Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow.esm

FOOK2 - Main.esp
! This plugin requires 'calibr.esm and fook2 - main.esm', which was not found

FOOK2 - [DIK] DLC Improvement Kit.esp
! This plugin requires 'anchorage.esm, thepitt.esm, brokensteel.esm, pointlookout.esm, calibr.esm, and fook2 - main.esm', which was not found

FOOK2 - Main [Hotfix].esp
* The auto-sorter doesn't recognize this mod. It is probably safe to put it anywhere, depending on how you want the various plugins to override one another.

FOOK2 - DIK [Hotfix].esp

well, we are at odd's here, I need to see the CRC data. this tells me which versions and sized if altered or corrupted, that data will be changed. even 1kb worth of data changes the CRC printout.

Boss, the standalone version can also show this, t=your spoiler is from fomm.

None the less, I have install what you have, went into the game and I too crash a lot. no fast traveling, instant crash.

so, I an running my processes first, dealing with textures and meshes, sorting them out, finding out if any of this set has bad items or corrupted items that will cause a crash.

the xedit thing shows only internal changes, not really conflicts. one package has smaller armors, slightly different so i used those as overwrites. In order of load, I over write the data so to stay in that groove. there seems to be cells, "walls" of these cells that case the crashing. Creatures ? possible NPC's or armors on them. don't know yet.

you can still use loot , not just for sorting , but information extraction. we still need to see things other than load orders.
