Crashing at the top of the Washington Monument

Ok, after searching around on google for quite some time I haven't been able to solve my problem so thought I would ask here.

Basically I cannot enter the area at the top of the washington monument in the mall (the one you get to by riding in the elevator) This is the area that you install the Virgo dish for the GNR quest and as such I cannot complete it. When I use the elevator or travel there from another area using 'movetoqt' command the game crashes.

I'm running various mods but I'm becoming convinced they are not at fault, there are no other areas I have problems entering and I get the same crash after turning off most of (if not all) mods. If this is a known bug with mods then the ones I am running are Unoffical FO3 patch, calibr, Fook2, Casm, Gnr Enhanced, F3 Project reality and nmc's maximum texture pack. This is my first time running the game with mods but I followed step by step various guides to setting them all up and aside from this problem they seem to be working fine.

Ok, I have also tried finishing this quest through console commands but haven't had much luck. I eventually got the quest to ding completed in my quest log but it doesn't actually progress. I don't get the GNR transmission of it being fixed and Three dog just gives me the dialogue relating to installing the dish (even though my quest log thinks it's done)

I'm basically just playing the rest of the game around this but it's kind of infuriating the completionist side of my brain. Help meh, please

Do you possess the latest version of TESEdit? (FO3Edit_r1729) IF not, for me, you need to use that because i know what the outcome should be when yo scan for details I direct you to scan for.

So (http://s217773845.onlinehome.us/files/TES5Edit_r1729.7z) Grab that, extract it, rename it to FO3edit_r1729.exe), Move the Entire folder to a safe place. run it, make sure it find the games folder. once it does, I'll help you set it up so you can get the correct results you need to find the bug at hand.

in the top of that spot, there is clutter items. this world space is all by it's self, floating in the air but appears to be part of a structure when in fact it's not.

when the cell loads, the game is CTDing means something is in there that is not right.

another way to make darn sure it's not a fauling game engine loading things you think are turned off, is to move the plugins out of the data foler completely, DO NOT delete them, just put them else where ok...........Load only fallout 3 when you have saved the game at the bottom of the Elevator. load only fallout3.esm if the game still crashes out, Move the mesh and texture folders out of the data directory with the plugins...where you moved them to. keep the software together but out of the way. reload the game and try again. if the game allows you to load it? see if it will now complete.

should it complete? you now know it's data in one of the locations that was moved out causing you to CTD.

the saved game.....back up that saved game folder first, use only the one you intend to destroy because all data when loaded will get copied into the saved game, you only need a good saved game as a template test game for these tests, your back up saves will work once you figure out whats wrong.

this is a process of Elimination. TES5Edit is for later use, we will use it's assets to determine what is being placed in that Environment that should not be there at all.

Thanks for responding :)

I had a copy of FO3edit but I think mine was .32 whereas yours was .33 so I grabbed a copy. I still have both though.

Ahh I had suspected the top of the monument was a separate space as I had tried to noclip up there but couldn't see anything.

Ok, I went through some of the steps you suggested. I have moved all plugins (including the dlc) apart from the core fallout ones and tried the elevator, CTD. I then tried moving the mod related texture and meshes folders and tried again, CTD. I assumed I didn't want to move all of the texture and meshes folders. Though I'm unsure how NMC's texture packs install. I could unload them in FOMM if necessary because I know that doesn't have a plugin for it.

Oh and I have backed up all my saves. I also have backups of all the mod files in case something goes horribly wrong lol.

you want only fallout's main game files sitting in the data directory. IF you have inventory from the other mods? Dump it first, could be that too.

the trick is finding where the code is stuck at. Remove all doubt, if the saved game still loads but only ctd's at that one spot, you can rename the main games folder, create a new folder using the Original name, place junk files, "copied files into it ,uninstall the game, re-install the game.

use the original saved game and run it. you should be able to complete the quest stages from that point. the data in the renamed main game folder is most likely been corrupted by a mod or an installed mix of things.

Or I send you a custom made patch to circumvent the original data you have now.?? it's already online and waiting for you.

NMC's texture packs

Do you see that patch of roadway in the virtual sky way of the top section? I bet you that is why your crashing because NMC replaces road textures.

right where the door is...............

I would be happy to try the patch :)
I think like you say I would have to try a fresh install otherwise as I'm not overly familiar with the file structure of the vanilla game, there are likely plenty of mod files still in there.
I will try an inventory dump though, that's actually something I hadn't tried.

Oh I didn't see your second post there, erm it's possible though I have unloaded nmc at least once (though with all other mods still on) I could try to unload it now, I installed it through FOMM so I assume if I unload it from there then it will get rid of everything.
