The Death of Ser Jory

@Moonwing: There is no such thing as luck, Master Vrook Crook (AKA Devil's Advocate) said so in KOTOR

@DWolf: Family connections. His father must have been a knight so he became one too.

Moonwing- well, if the character died in the ritual, I'd want my money back as it would have been far too short of a game. With a pretty lousy ending.

BKE- eh, its a possibility!

More than a possibility, noble titles such as knighthood were passed down in the family for generations during the middle ages. The best modern day example is the queen of England, she did nothing but be born into the right family and technically owns Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, parts of China, Australia, and until a while ago, India as well. Ferelden seems to be based mostly upon the british middle ages with some fantasy thrown in, including the dogs.

Ser Jory dying is not tragic, it is expected. A man who says he will fight and then backs out on an organization known to do whatever is necessary to keep the darkspawn contained with aims to wipe them out, it should be a no-brainer he is going to die. That would be sorta like trying to join the mafia, learning some dirt on them, and then going "Oh well, on second thought, a life of crime isn't for me." You just know at that point you're dead, and any thoughts to the contrary is sheer stupidity. As a side note, every conversation I have with the man I chose the option "You are not too bright are you?"

He did sort of seem like a coward to me also. And he could have chosen to take a shot at drinking the blood. At least he might have lived on to fight another day. It was made very clear to all of them that there was no turning back. Although watching Duncan kill him was harsh, it was that kind of world, wasn't it? I thought that Daveth was quite brave and would have made an interesting character, although as someone mentioned earlier maybe a tad too much like Zevran.

Between Daveth dying and Jory biting the big one, I felt much more loss with Daveth. As for being like Zevran, I have to disagree, their class/skills may be the same, but Daveth was much more interesting to me.

Daveth was brave, witty and cool...would have made an excellent Grey Warden. It's a shame he died. Maybe a mod to keep him on?

Dang what a waste of perfectly good piece o' wood.

HAHAHAHAHAHA Kudos given for the laugh that I got from that comment!

Ok, here's food for thought. Considering how in many games, both of them end up dying nekkid..... how many folks would vote that these two are cannon fodder for the wilds, and good for cash on their gear at the end?

I like Daveth and Jory, and really don't think they're just cannon fodder, even if in my games they do sometimes end up dying naked. ;)

Jory isn't a physical coward; he's a combat proven knight. Give him a commander and a unit of men around him going up against an equal foe and he's fine. He even had the skill to win a local tournament and catch Duncan's eye.

Jory is the local champion who chokes when given his shot at the big leagues.

He's there (imo) to point out the kind of sacrifices a Warden has to be willing to make, and the step beyond that being a Warden requires. Wardens don't get to have real families (see The Calling; they may get married, but they can't keep any children, and those children are rare), they're not in it for the glory or honor, and they absolutely don't get to say "It's too dangerous" when there's any chance of completing the mission. Jory is also there to point out the lengths to which Wardens will go to keep their secrets.

Poor Daveth is there to show that even if you're brave and smart and tough, that still might not be enough to be a Warden. His death also helps show you that this is really serious.

I'd have liked to have kept them both as companions, or to have run into them in the fade.
