If you have either Vista or Win7, and have installed in the default location, mods may not work.

Best solution, reinstall outside of the program files folders. Most people create a new folder C:\Games\Oblivion and install there. Please at least read the complete uninstall/reinstall procedure before attempting to uninstall - it could save a lot of time and :wallbash:

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

Get, install and use OBMM. It is far far better that the data list in the game. It can also allow you to do many things that the data list cannot, like changing the load order.

Many mods will not work without the latest patch, or OBSE. The read me should tell you, but might not as too many mod authors just assume that everybody has these.

OBSE: http://obse.silverlock.org/

Patches: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS TO GET THE RIGHT PATCH! :thumbsup:http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

OBMM and OBSE are not mods and do not install like mods so be sure to read the instructions.

I have a set of beginners tutorials with a very simple mod. It will work on any version of Oblivion and does not require anything else to work. It is a good mod to test to see if you are installing properly.

If you use them I would appreciate some feedback as to what needs improvement and what works for you.

What you should have used to open the file was an unzipping program. Such as the 7-zip I recommend.

Notepad is good for about anything that you can read - such as a readme.txt or the Oblivion.ini file.

The mods are compressed (zipped) and need to be unzipped before they can be used.

When they are uncompressed, most mods will have an esp file. that is what shows up in the data list. The meshes and textures also need to be installed for them to work properly.

I'm not sure I understand your question. I think what you want is to associate all of the different compressed formats 7-z, rar, zip to the unzipping program you use - for example if you use the FREE 7-zip program, the associate all of the formats to that. or if you use the Try before you buy Winrar (rar) then associate them all to that. Then when you click on a mod in any format it will automatically be run with that unzipping program.

Here is a link to a tutorial on associating files for 7-zip

Okay my question now is that, when I download a mod is does not ask me to install it, So how do I bring up the Install Shield so that I can install the mod?

Read this and follow the "Next Steps": Intro to Modded Oblivion. There isn't an install shield wizard for unofficial mods (most of them, anyway.) When you get to "Preparing for Mods" (step #3) see the "Oblivion Mod Manager" page (under "Related Pages" section at the bottom.) After reading that, be sure to read the "OMOD Installation" page. OBMM is a good tool for new mod users to start with. Keep reading until you run out of "Next Steps." You can read while you download mods, but I suggest reading before doing anything, or you will have a big mess on your hands pretty quickly.

Edit: I missed the earlier posts on this page somehow, but you should still read those. Hmmm...What mod are you trying to install? Also, not all mods have plugins (.esp and .esm files) so there is no "ticking" to be done for those. However, you should set "BSA Redirection" in OBMM. Select it in the Utilities (side bar) > Archive invalidation menu.
