He's in the process of becoming a shriek, so I would think being born as a darkspawn is not the only way. It seems to be similar to Lord of the Rings and their orc manufacturing plant. Of course they are made of different resources but I still would think the races of Ferelden can be turned into darkspawn without being born as one. After speaking to him, he runs, and attacks you if you try to speak to him again, claiming, "the Song told him to". Alistair talks to the Warden and comments on how it was a mercy killing, considering how far along the taint was." Since he no longer has the name, Tamlen and is called tormented shriek, he is actually in the process of becoming a shriek--of course, this could all be up to the interpretation of the wiki statement. RedVexHK Posted May 10, 2010 Share Posted May 10, 2010 I don't remember her name.. but during your quest within the deep roads you happen upon a member of the party you are searching for... mad and incoherent mostly.. but she describes some of what happened.. especially to the dwarven women.. it's made clear ,tho I'm not sure she outright says it..but the women were definitely raped.. I'd assume it was intended as both torture.. part of turning them... and ensuring they reproduced... if they survived....I may be wrong as to if genetics take any part in it.. but I'm pretty sure it does... Of course they are made of different resources but I still would think the races of Ferelden can be turned into darkspawn without being born as one.So late, so late...BUT if you pay attention to what Hespith is saying (the one singing that creepy behind song) she says the males are twisted and follow the Blight so I am assuming the males they taint and turn, the females they breed.
