Can dog be made into an effective combatant?

I long would have liked to have kept him on as a companion but quite frankly, he sucks in combat. Anyway to change this?

Two mods help a lot. Extra Dog Slot lets you keep Dog with you almost all the time without giving up a companion slot. I probably wouldn't use Dog without this, as much as I like him. Full Combatant Dog gives him access to more Warrior talents, which gets him closer to par with the rest of your warriors. He'll never be as good in the mid to late game as your other companions (with their specializations, equitpment & re-specked min-maxed builds), but he can be darn useful as a pet. Early in the game, he's excellent.

I use console commands and Catonas Custom Items_HIGH STATS. There is a kaddis for the dog that gives him uber stats as well as my console commands putting all my companions at level 40 with very high attributes as well. He kills with one growl lol Well, maybe a growl and a howl. ;)

I don't really want to do that and it's a shame. I play with the mod Awakening is difficult, which makes the game really hard and I had Shale in my party and Shale has the same problems. I had to give her tons of cheats to make her half way effective, which I don't like doing. Oh well.
