Archdemon vs Dragon

The Old Gods are dragons. And the Codex explicitly refers to the Old Gods, AKA the Archdemons, with male pronouns. But, I thought it was only female dragons that get huge and grow wings? What? Is someone having pronoun trouble here?

very very interesting. Nice work spotting that.

My thinking is that the old gods are the progenitors. That the dragons of "today" and of legend, are their descendants, and that somewhere along the course of their line, the two different genders too different evolutionary paths?

The females stayed more true to their original forms, but the males, which do much less traveling, and mostly stay secluded, evolved to a form which takes less energy and nourishment to sustain. Basically streamlined themselves by combining their appendages.

Also because the females are "on the go" more, they are more predatory and their form is better suited for hunting/killing/combat.

They could be like some Snapper and Grouper species that change sex as the need arises (they can only do it once.) You have to admit that the page and a half in the codex couldn't even begin to scratch the surface of Dragon biology and physiology (not that any Thedans would be privy to that information anyway.)

Or I could be way off base with that

Thats definitely a possibility. There are frogs which are capable of changing gender to female if there are no femmes in their ecology. Bees can also do this.

Or perhaps the old gods are/were shapeshifters and decided that the female form is more practical than the male.

Or maybe its got something to do with their transformation from the taint.

Interesting catch ... Old Gods ... Old Goddesses

It would seem that since when we speak of the Roman God's, it is generally accepted that it includes both male and female as a generic catchall and that's how they refer to the Old Gods / Female Dragons.

Yes, political correctness can muddy the waters rather well. The word Mankind refers to all of humanity, but if you add in PC garbage, it can be viewed as only equaling only male humanity. This PC stuff is relatively recent, the further you go back in languages and cultural usages of them, versus daily survival, the less people cared about making more and specific words for things, and just generally getting information across rather fast and efficiently. Hence mickeymcp is probably correct, in that the world of the game is using Gods as it's original terminology, meaning beings of celestial power, rather than the PC version where you would have to take that extra second to say something along the lines of "RUN, the Old Gods and Goddesses are attacking!" rather than just "RUN! The Old Gods are coming!"
