Been away a long time and now starting fresh.

So it's been a long long time since I played Oblivion and now I'm ready to hop back in. So I've got the game (GoTY edition) installed cleanly now. In doing some reading, I've decided I'm going ambitious and want to install FCOM.

Found this awesome guide (http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/walkthroughs/fcomguide/requiredownloads) and I have a quick question. I'm at a part where I have a choice on installation method it seems. Going BAIN or OMODS.

Which route should I take good folks?

Thanks for the advice!!

I am all for BAIN, but it is not as easy to learn as OBMM. However, once you get the hang of it, the pay-off will be quite apparent. You can read my more formal argument (comparison) on the "Preparing for Mods" page.

Edit: In order to go the BAIN route, you should have read that page already. The pages you should read prior to starting the guide are linked in the second paragraph of the introductory page for the guide.

Thanks for the quick reply Tom and thank you as well for an awesome guide on all this jazz. One more quick question before I get to work on it: I understand it's fairly easy to blow up your installation of Oblivion while working with this beast. What should I backup in order to do a quick restore back to "vanilla" in the event of a major mistake? Is it as simple as one or two folders?

NM. Just found this info on the "Preparing for Mods" page. I'm gonna just shut my yapper and get to reading. :P

Read "Preparing for Mods." If you read (thoroughly and read ReadMes) it is unlikely that your installation will blow up. As long as you build your setup slowly, figuring out the problem should (theoretically) not be too difficult. Do not worry about that. Get comfortable using mods, keep taking your time with expansion, and have fun.

Edit: Get FCOM running by itself first. It is no joke to install. Once you have successfully installed your first FCOM setup, you can reference the main site pages (especially "Downloading Mods" and "Installing Mods" for guidelines for a general installation.) The first portion of the main site has a guide-like format as well (notice the "Next Step" at the bottom and "Last Step" at the top of each of those pages.)

But I should follow all 14 steps on your "Preparing for Mods" page in order to get FCOM itself running correct?

No. You should follow all of those steps to setup the best mod-using environment. The main site pages are not FCOM-specific at all. You can skip step #3, but I highly recommend everything else, as well as the OBSE (and plugins) sections. You will not have to download much else after doing that. At some point, you will probably want PyFFI, but you do not need it at the moment.

Ok I see now. Well since you suggest this as the best mod-using environment I'm going to go ahead and get it all up and working as you've laid it out. Might as well start with a great foundation.

Thanks again for all the effort you put into this documentation!

If you are at all confused about BAIN or want to know more about it as you go through the FCOM setup, reference Psymon's guide - http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/ I think that all new BAIN users should, at least, read the first three sections. This is linked in the guide, but I think it gets overlooked (when it should not be.) You do not have to read all of it if you do not want to, the guide should suffice for FCOM. That is the best available resource for BAIN, however. I do not use his packaging method, but it works.

Edit: If you have any questions or feedback about the site, please post in the site's thread.

Not sure if you're still around reading Tom, but if so I have a quick question. When I got to launch Wrye Bash for the first time, it's not actually doing anything. No launching, nothing. Thoughts? I'm beginning a google search now on this.

Did you install all of the prerequisites? You should have installed the Wrye Python 02 package.

Edit: Do you have Oblivion installed outside of the default folder (if you are not using WinXP)?
