Save CTD

After annihilating my data folder and starting fresh in the fallout world with some new mods that have had no conflict so far, i find my self with a new problem. Ever since one time i was visiting tennpenny tower, every time i save or auto-save i get an immediate CTD. yes i know of the ol' "blow yourself up" method and have tried it and it lets me save for a while but then eventually i get the same problem again. to keep playing i have to load my save three times and when i want to do a non auto-save of my game i also have to reload my previous auto-save at least 3 times. i have no idea what to do now and any help would be great so i dont have to start fresh AGAIN.

Well first off, there are no mods which don't conflict. To assume that there are would be a mistake. View them inside FO3edit, to see the actual contents. At the same time even if they were really "conflict free" the process of making the actual mods often causes them to get "dirty" where things like "removing indentical to master records" an "setting deleted to disabled" among other tools must be used to clean up the mods, which should have been done before they were uploaded, but we never do that.

Blow yourself up double loading save games isn't a bad idea, but it's not going to work very well if the game auto-loads the privious save automaticly. Meaning you would need to press Esc before it did so, or have a mod which altered the death camera. Then in some cases some stupid NPC in the general area of the player charicter when they nuke their feet, can go agro, or lock in a similar bug into your second load, being the one you are about to run with. All you really need to do is either look out for NPC's, or just load up, walk thru a door, or fast travel, spin the camera, then press esc an load yer second save game.

You shouldn't be auto saving or quicksaving in the first place, press esc each time, an don't use the continue button at the main loading screen. Then anytime you create a new install of fallout 3 it's also a good time to run a test phase to get a baseline of how well it's going to run on your system, while also following the tweekguide, setting your settings, among other things. Which would rule out the basic install of fallout 3 or fallout 3 with DLC's as a cause to any future problem that one might have. I actually run two seperate phases, one without DLC an one with. After that I put a few mods in at a time, fix them, clean them, FO3edit merge patch them, fix the merge patch, master update, then run test phases before I install anything else.

Thanks for the reply, i didn't think it was mod problem so i decided to delete my older saves and try the load twice or blow yourself up method again to no avail. Someone suggested to me yesterday that it may be a problem caused by the "anthony Ling's Finer Things" mod which i do happen to have installed. i suppose i will try to uninstall it and see how it goes and will get back to you if it doesnt.

And thanks for the saving tips, ive turned auto save off and am using the load button from now on.

Well I mean it's not like you have to double load each time. When you launch the game the first time, there isn't really much in your system cache. Then when fallout 3 is loading up about 10,009 things are happening, namely loading a file list from the .BSA, then also the mods loose files, then also playing the menu music, then also now loading a save game at the same time, and all the while the fallout.exe is bringing the Gamebro engine, Havok physics, FaceGen, and LOD, All that stuff, then the mods .esm an .esp too.

This is all just system tax, meaning the system is busy. You might be able to get a good picture of this if you were streaming music from pandora or something before you launch the game. Let it keep playing music, then launch fallout 3, then load a save game. Try to run around, an you'll see it's skippy, an the music might even be skippy too. However at this point you can fast travel somewhere or enter a door, load the save game again (Tha double load) At which point when it's loaded all the data is already in the system cache (taking tax off the system) So now you can run around smoothly while the music keeps on streaming smooth. Heck that's how I figured it out, an it was proven to be true from the others comming up with nuke your feet. I would imagine it stems from the fallout game being really huge in raw data.

So after you launch, you might double load that first one, after that it's pretty pointless. Then it's also used in other experimental ways, like to get rid of a bug or clean a corupted save.

Lings finer things can't be named as the cause anymore than any other mod you didn't fix with FO3edit, FO3edit merge patch, FO3edit clean, OverRides, FO3 edit Merge patch. None of the mods cause problems when used alone, it's when you use them with other mods without first fixing them to be able to work together. Even the DLC's are dirty when you get them, an such require some fixing.
