Another my game crashes with all these mods, any suggestions thread LOL

Hello all. I have just recently enjoyed using Nexus and it's a great site and it looks like Fallout New Vegas will be a completely different game if I can ever get it up and running without crashes. Thanks to all the modders who made this possible.

Did I just install too many? Couldn't help it... there were so many I wanted to try. LOL

Also, is there not a text file somewhere in the game that tells me what file it crashed on?

A few things I'm doing, will hopefully help you folks who are nice enough to chip in with some tips:

-- Using the Nexus Mod Manager to install everything

-- Using Script Extender

-- Arranged my mods in the category order recommended

-- Crashes randomly, can't say I've found any particular pattern except that I had an issue where it would crash after I would set my Pipboy down after putting on new weapons and armor, but it doesn't go more than 2 minutes without a crash after starting game, I can make it through Doc's house, it's out in Goodsprings where things start to go haywire --- another example of randomness, it crashed when I opened Doc's to door to goodsprings, I load a quick save from 3 seconds earlier, open door again and now no crash??

-- most of these I found from the wiki link that recommends the best, or I went with files that had most endoresements at Nexus.. I did not bother with anything that couldn't be installed by Nexus Mod Manager

-- followed proper protocol for new texture mods with archive installation

-- used Nvedit to make 2 small load order suggestion changes, and also created a merged patch for stability

In general, I recommend New Vegas Anti Crash. Not only does it make the game crash a lot less, you also get an nvac.log file - I don't think NV has any kind of crash log of its own.

I don't think you have too many mods, the consensus seems to be that the magical freakout number for plugins is somewhere around 130 (although, the less, the better). For load order, there is also LOOT, it can help find errors, as well as FNVEdit, there are tutorials for that floating around.

What texture mods without plug-ins do you have? I'm guessing "proper protocol" also means you have some sort of 4GB enabler for NV. (Though afaik memory issues normally come with an error message.)

Mods that add NPCs (like momod) can cause performance issues.

Modding is kind of a game in itself.

One thing I noticed, you have Nevada Skies and Fellout?

Q: Does NVSkies work with Fellout?
A: It does not work with any other weather mod.

From the NSkies FAQ. Not sure if that would cause crashes or just make one of the mods not work at all. Just pointing out that even long mod descriptions should be read carefully.

Thank you for the help. Great advice.

Didn't know Anit-Crash and LOOT existed. Installed both and trying them out.

Didn't catch the Fellout vs. Skies conflict. Thanks for pointing out. I'll get rid of Fellout.

As far as the 4G, I did read about it, but didn't enable it. I only downloaded the medium textures mod, but I may just go ahead and try it.

You're welcome, I hope it does actually help.

4GB is kind of maybe definitely essential when you're modding NV, especially with texture mods. It'll probably save you at least a few of the many headaches this wonderful game can cause. (Even with medium textures I used to get Out of Memory crashes at one point because I'd forgotten to re-enable 4GB after a re-install.)
