DA (in the future) needs a more personalised story and a more personal

After all, you can only fight and slay so many Archdemons before the theme gets old.

One of the most compelling aspects of the BG series was the very personal story driving your character and the very personal villains, beginning with Saverok and then later with Irenicus (who remains to my mind the BEST rpg villain ever). I think if DA goes in this direction for the next game it will be even better than it already is; true enough, with a certain baby and a certain babe, maybe the direction has already been chosen but I think this is where it needs to go for the next round.

To mind, DA has no such memorable quotes as this:

Life... is strength. That is not to be contested; it seems logical enough. You live; you affect your world. But is it what you want? You are... different inside. This woman lives and has strength of a sort. She lost her parents to plague, her husband to war, but she persevered. Her farm prospered, her children are well-fed, and her name respected throughout her land. She lived as she thought she should. And now she is dead. Her land will be divided, her children will move on, and she will be forgotten. She lived a good life, but she had no real power; she was a slave to death. I wonder if you are destined to be forgotten as she was. Will your life fade in the shadow of greater beings?

and my favourite:

I... I do not remember your love, Ellesime. I have tried to. I have tried to recreate it, to spark it anew in my memory. But it is gone... a hollow, dead thing. For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. And then nothing. The Seldarine took that from me, too. I look upon you and I feel nothing. I remember nothing but you turning your back on me, along with all the others. Once my thirst for power was everything. And now I hunger only for revenge. And... I... Will... HAVE IT!!

What are your opinions? Would a story more along the lines of BG 2 be good or bad?

I am embarrassed to say I never played BG 2, though I would really love to play it after hearing nothing but amazing things about it ever since da:o came out. And I don't want to spam but I just had to comment on how beautifully written those quotes are! You can feel the emotion and power behind them which makes me even more determined to find BG 2 now, my best friend and I were talking about finding it the other week and now I definitely must! Anyway, I will be following this thread!

Hmm...to be honest, before I discovered DA back in January or so I was replaying BG2/TOB with a bunch of mods installed; it is old but the story is the best ever and the characters are as memorable as those in DA.

Even after 8 years of playing BG2 on and off I don't think I've come close to discovering everything. Actually, I suffer from a curse of not being able to finish the ToB expansion. I always get about 70 hours into the original and sequel (With the intention of playing it fro mbeginning to end of the entire Bhaal Saga), and then something in real life happens or I get sucked into another game, lol.

Anyway, BG2 is still a beautiful game, like you are playing in a really cool fantasy painting. You're living a wonderful novel, etc. It is just, fantastic. Still superior in many ways to DA Origins, maybe nostalgia gives me a bias.

A story along the lines of the BG saga would be fantastic, imo. Opinions are somewhat divided over at the Bioware Social site, with some wanting to wipe the slate clean and start a completely new story and characters. I (and many others) think this would be a waste, far better to go the Baldurs Gate route and continue developing the existing characters, mixing things up with some new faces and putting the Warden into difficult situations. As someone who romanced Morrigan on my first playthrough, I have to say the potential for that plot thread is too great to ignore.

I didn't feel the conclusion of DA was "epic" enough to warrant ending the Warden & friends story in Thedas. I think there is more that can be done before moving onto a new set of characters. I want to see some BG2 style developments - bringing to things to a acceptable conclusion ala TOB, once that's done I've no problem moving onto a new "story arc" with a new set of characters.

Yes, BG2/TOB were groundbreaking in so many ways...milestones of their time.
