Fad3away Posted May 16, 2010 Share Posted May 16, 2010 So I'm doing the construction set wiki beginners guide and I don't exactly understand what the hell this guys talking about. First of all HERE is the link to the tut. Okay its under 1. Move the Camera The little box says Double click on the block and a dialog box will open, giving information about the block. Check that the name of the object is <name>. If it is not, close the dialog box, deselect and try again. In the central area is some information about the object's position. This lists the object's x, y, and z coordinates, and some info about rotation. These should all read 0,0,0. This is the default position. If, in the course of the tutorial, you drag the building out of the way by mistake, don’t panic. Select it, open the dialog, and reset it to 0,0,0. Note, however, that this will flag the object as having been edited, with a * next to the object's name. First off, I drag the box over the box. Then it says to "double click on the block", so I just double click on the "block" and it says name of the object is <name>, where? I don't see it that. Am I supposed to know the name? or is it literally <name>? and it says it should all read 0,0,0, it never does it says some other big numbers and stuff, no matter how many times i start over. My guess is that the "name" of the object is listed in the "Base Object" field, and the x,y,z positions and rotations are whatever they are supposed to be for the particular object you are looking at. I am also in the process of using the tutorial and I have come to believe that some of the information contained therein may be wrong or simply outdated; however, I find that if you use the tutorial loosely, rather then following every step to the letter, you can get much more use out of it. the reason: if you only do exactly what the tutorial says, you can easily get lost when you don't understand something. Each time it gives you a step, play around with it, get comfortable with it, and don't freak out if it doesn't seem to feel right. For your specific problem, the author is not saying that the name of the item is <name>... well, to be honest, I am not sure what he is trying to say, exactly; that was a trouble spot for me as well. What I think he means is that the name of the object, which is found in the small faded out box next to the words "Base object", should be the same as the name of the object in the box. Either way, that's not really important. As for the bit about positioning, well this part confounded me as well, and I figured out why later. You see, in lesson 2, you will be asked to set the x,y,z axis for the main interior object (basically, the room interior) to 0,0,0. I suspect that as part of his personal process, the author likes to start working at those exact coordinates. So, when he says that the middle part should read 0,0,0, he is saying this as a mistake, because he is used to setting those particular numbers to 0,0,0. Or... he was talking about the rotation, which should always be set to 0,0,0 be default, and is also in the middle. Either way, little mistakes like that can be expected because the author basically wrote up this very detailed tutorial in his own time, and that kind of work can be a rather taxing experience. Still, if you are serious about making mods for oblivion, I suggest you bear with it. It irritates me like hell though, because I would like to get it exactly right, instead having to guess and trail and error. But it was the same thing for me with photoshop. So I can do it, I just don't have too much time to spend on it as i would like so it'll take me longer to learn I suppose. The guy himself said he is a newbie. Although I applaud him for his efforts and time he put into making the tut, a novice really shouldn't be making tuts, and if they do, they should have it totally proofread by some one experienced.
