Do I have the right specs?

Hello Everyone, I am new to DAO and I am having some problems.

My first and main issue would have to be at random points in the game pc will reboot while playing with no warning at all. I am thinking maybe a RAM leak but I don't know because like I said it is random but it happens quite frequently. I am not exactly a genius when it comes to pc's but I know enough to get by and I was wondering maybe if its my specs are not up to par for the game. Which brings me to my second question...

What settings should I run the game at? Here are my pc specs...

-Processor: AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core 2.70ghz

-4gb RAM (3.5 usable)

-32 bit operationg system (Running Windows 7)

-500 GB Hard Drive (over 200gb free)

-NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT Video card (using 8.17.11.9745 drivers)

I would just like to know at what settings I should play this game at and at what resolution giving my current specs? Also wondering about the crashing issue....Thanks ahead of time ^^

I can help you try to troubleshoot the rebooting issue. Most likely, it is the RAM, but not as a leak. This is a common occurance when a ram board is FAILING, going bad. Or is loose.

But I get ahead of myself, lets start with the simplest stuff first. Check all your electrical connections. All your plugs to the wall socket, all your plugs in your power strip, the plug that runs into the back of your power supply.

Also when this happens, check to see if any of the OTHER items which are plugged into that socket reboot as well. If so, it could be an issue with the power strip, or the wall outlet itself.

Next, update and do a virus scan. Since some of them CAN fool a local virus scanner, after using the one on your machine, I recommend doing an online virus scan like housecall. http://free.antivirus.com/

There is malware that can cause your computer to reboot. There are also programs that allow a remote user (cracker) to reboot your system from wherever they happen to be at...among many other things.

It could be a heating issue. Do your fans make any kind of unusual sounds? Do they get really active, right before the shutdown?

Now this part of it will mean opening up your case. Shut down and UNPLUG the machine before doing this. After opening the case, make sure to keep your hand/wrist touching the metal of the case frame, to avoid causing any electro-static damage to any of your componants. Also, do not do this with yourself, or the machine setting on a carpet. (you should never have a laptop or pc sitting directly on a carpet. static electricity) Or in a chair that can build up unusual amounts of static electricity.

-Check to make sure that your power supply (big box at the back of the machine where the power cord goes into) is secure, and doesnt wobble around. If it loose its connection to the frame, it looses it's ground, and can "blink" power.

-Check to make sure that all the connectors to motherboard are solidly and securely in place.

-Check to make sure that your RAM boards are securely seated. Simply push straight down on them.

-IF you are tech savvie enought to feel good about removing your RAM boards, you can take them out, take them to a computer store, and have them checked on a diagnostics to see if they are operating correctly. If not, you will have to take your entire tower in to have the diagnostics run on it.

This takes a while, they will charge you for about 2-4 hours of labor, and will run you anywhere from about 25-50 dollars, depending on where you take it.

Generally when the problem is the game or mods it dosn't reboot the computer, it either locks up or crashes to desktop (CTD) dumping you out of the game.

A reboot is usually caused by the +5 volt line going low. The same thing as pressing the reset button on the case. this can be almost any component that uses the 5volts. Especially - as Darkewolf says, Ram chips. It can also be a weak power supply. If you have upgraded anything in your system, especially the graphics card it can be taking too much power when you run a graphics hungry game. The stock power supplies on many big name systems (Dell, HP etc) are barely powerful enough to run the parts they come with. A new graphics card will overtax them. When they are pushed hard, they usually heat up before they shut down, so check the Power supply also.

Well from what you both describe it sounds like it could be either the heating issue or the power supply...I have no way of telling though, one thing that causes me to believe it is a heating issue is the fact that it did it a lot more (now that I think about it) when I had my rooms air conditioner off and I always leave my siding open (bad habit I know) to the pc so the air can freely flow through. Sadly it also sounds like it could be the power supply...(sigh) I am not sure what to make of it and since I go to computer shows and have the pc pretty much customized I cant really go by the standard build of most other pc's.

Anywho thanks for the advice and diagnosis guys, at least I am a bit at ease with knowing what the problem could be. Any other advice or tips would be a world of good also any performance enhancing tips or what have you to make the game run any better would be awesome...Thanks everyone

You can get some good deals at computer shows, but you can get some real junk too. I have seen some really cheap power supplies that I wouldn't trust. As well as a generic power supply in a brand name box. Mislabeled graphics cards and a few other shady deals. I have also seen good name brand like new parts for about half price. I used to run a computer shop and can usually tell the really good deals from the low priced junk.

A simple thing to look at on a power supply is weight. Usually (not always) a heavier power supply will have better components inside. As for RAM, stick to name brands, get matched ram sticks from the same batch if possible - they will usually be packaged together. If not possible, at least try to get the same part number from the same manufacturer.

A dirty inside secret - companies like OCZ don't make the RAM they sell, they buy it from the same Chinese factory that makes the cheap stuff. But they do test more stringently, and you can get OCZ (and other brand names) replaced if it's bad - good luck with the no name generic RAM.

Well, for heating, increased airflow would help. You can find cooling fans fairly cheap on ebay, and as long as you have a power slot available on your mobo it shouldnt be a problem.

Heck, even a small desk fan blowing into your case can help..... however.... you're running a much higher risk of blowing dust, lint, SMOKE (if you're a smoker) (which tar buildup can kill a lot of your componants. Especially fans, floppy and cd/dvd drives, and hard drives!) and other contaminants into your system.

You can find performance monitoring software all over the net. I havent looked into those for many years, so I'm afraid that I cant recommend one. However, majorgeeks.com and downloads.com are both good sources for items like this. This would allow you to monitor your heat if the program includes such a function. (varies by software). If visiting downloads.com I would VERY STRONGLY recommend using a browser like firefox, mozilla, or something besides IE. Last time I visited their site using IE they were running some VERY browser unfriendly scripts on the site that sent my browser into a loop and locked it up.

Oops. Looks like we missed that while troubleshooting. Sorry about that!

O yeah, your system is definitely up to the minimum system requirements that are listed on the gamebox. About half a gig sub-par ram recommended for optimum tho.

Minimum (XP): Core 2 Duo with 1.4 GHz or Athlon 64 X2 with 1.8 GHz, 1024 MB RAM, Geforce 6600 GT or Radeon X850 with 128 MB, 20 GB disc space

Minimum (Vista): Core 2 duo with 1.6 GHz or Athlon 64 X2 with 2.2 GHz, 1536 MB RAM, Geforce 7600 GT or Radeon X1550 with 256 MB, 20 GB disc space

Recommended: Core 2 Quad with 2.4 GHz (or comparable AMD CPU), 2048 MB RAM (XP), 4096 MB RAM (Vista), Geforce 8800 GTS or Radeon HD 3850 with 512 MB

Dragon Age: Origins - More cores, better performance

The processor is the most important component for a lag free Dragon Age: Origins experience. The CPU shouldn't just run at least 2.8 GHz but also have four cores. In our test the performance was increased by 29 percent when we replaced our C2D E6600 (dual-core) with the C2Q Q6600 (quad-core) which also runs at 2.4 GHz. Thus we recommend the C2Q Q8400 or the Phenom II X4 940 BE - both processors cost about 150 Euros. Detailed CPU benchmarks will follow as soon as possible.

From pcgames hardware.

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,698666/Dragon-Age-Origins-System-Requirements-Benchmarks-and-Graphics-Tuning-Top-article-of-November-2009/Practice/

Tho, the recommendations don't really matter. I've seen cases of where peeps with 6gigs of ram are having CTD from RAM starvation because of the damned memory leak in the core.
