The Truth about Alistair...

I know this will start something, but I have to say it. I think the writers, by mistake probably, made Alistair a lot like Hamlet. The prince caught in the middle of something he doesn't really want. They are both driven to extremes by the loss of their father (Al's case father figure) without any real knowledge or experience to know how to cope with it. And, to top it off, both are hellbent to enact their revenge. Granted Hamlet dies because of his, but Alistair is so entrenched in getting revenge at the Landsmeet that any rational thoughts are lost to him at the moment, even when he is hardened.

Beautifully explained.

As for the revenge thing, I stand by the fact that if someone killed your brother & King and your father (Duncan) along with all of your friends and comrades then proceeded to hunt you down like a dog to slaughter there is no way most anyone could just stand by and let that person live, no matter the reason.

elcooocin,

No argument on why the revenge, I was using the parallel between the two characters to show just how alike they are. Where Hamlet met with complete tragedy (almost everyone dies including himself) Alistair avoids the same fate, if only barely (depending on the player's choices). Even Loghain's fall from grace is dynamic. As an old professor told me once "the best soldiers in wartime make the worst civilians during peacetime."

EDIT: Hey, at least Alistair doesn't look up at you and say "I am dead, Horatio." ;)

Oooo, can I add some fuel to this fire? Nevermind, I would never wait for the answer to that question anyways.

Alistair, whiny lil brat who does indeed need to man up, playing with your dolls is all well and good in times of peace, but when war hits, shelve them and run your butt to the lines, especially when that war is literally where you live.

Roghain, moron, tactical nightmare, bigot, megalomaniac, and all around good sheath for a sword (read stick one in his guts and let him rot).

I was saddened that you had NO control over who to make a warden, cause in the end I would have chosen anyone other than those two. Give me back Daveth, and I will also take some random nameless city elf. There, four grey wardens, and none of them whiny or retarded!

I have found that it is rare to find any guy who likes Alistair!

He was made for us girls what can I say  Not to say all girls like him (there is the Zev love I know!) but he seems to hit our hearts directly in the center and firmly plant his ... um ... lets say heart  ... plant his heart there.

I am a guy, and i freaking married Alistair!!

Like i was going to let that one get way, (No im not gay, i just picked the best person for my character a female noble, personality wise that is. So for a male i pick liliana or morrigan ^^)

The point is i like characters like him, or sigrun, or liliana, there my top 3.

PS: (And i will not bother to argue this point) loghain had to pay for his crimes, no one who did what he did should get away with it, simple as that.

Stardusk, you are a guy, many guys just don't see what many females see in Alistair. If you don't like him whining, just do his personal quest immediately after Lothering and harden him. Less whiny. For me? I'm a sucker for a British accent and a guy who still thinks to give me a rose. I'm a sucker for someone admitting he's never had sex yet tells you he wants to do it with you because he's afraid time is running out. I'm also a sucker for a templar who uses Holy Smite and Sheild Bash, I think he's hot when he fights. Chances are you will never see Alistair through my eyes or any one else who does like him. Just know, Dragon Age is a personal game, it is filled with our personal choices and we tend to get attached to the characters that we choose. For me, I always choose Big Al. ;)

btw, I have an admin who didn't like Big Al and did all sorts of awful things to him and his family in his games, he used to bring tears to my eyes!

i.e. having 4 Grey Wardens on hand to deal with the Archdemon is better than 3.

I never play with Loghain so I don't know how this works but how do you get 4 Grey Wardens? I thought if you sided with Loghain, Alistair left? Does he still fight the Archdemon with you? As far as needing 4 Grey Wardens, the way I cheat, I can kill the Archdemon

Ooops, sorry about the double post.

Alistair is to dragon age, as Edward is to Twilight. Well...almost. Pretty close.

As they've been saying... it's a chick thing.

For myself, it's not that I don't NOT like him. There's qualities that I do admire about him. Such as his convictions, his ideals, and that he will stand by his friends. I dont see him as a coward, by any means.

A lot of it, is just Me. I've played through the game too much. All the long dialogs are starting to get on my nerves, and so are some of the characters *coff coff* Wynn *coff coff* and some of their imperfections.

And yeah, there's some stuff about his life that I can relate to. And some of it is stuff that I too believed when I was younger, more nieve (SP) and a whole lot less jaded.
