How does optimizing your level effect npc movement/AI

So, my issue is with optimizing my cell. My cell contains a number of NPC's, so 20 or so with various tasks to perform (it is a nightclub so duh), anyway, point of fact is that I need to divide the main galley of the vault up into several rooms and the NPC's will be performing tasks in this area. So, I'm wondering how this will effect the AI? From what I understand, if you separate them into rooms and you look in a certain direction or you are in a particular room, other rooms will not be visible in that area and due to the optimization and how the rooms are separated by portals, those characters will not be rendered. So if they aren't rendered, will they still travel to their destinations when those areas aren't rendered? Anyone know if this will become an issue? If so, I may need to re-build my mod and skip out on the vault idea because it's just too darn big to render the entire area. :(
