JoshuaCaleb
You certainly have to mind your specs. Just do not go overboard with mod additions. read some of the posts on your site...brilliant! Finally, someone who explains this stuff in plain English! Bethsoft or TESNexus should hire you to do their FAQs. I'll definitely have to re-evaluate my mod situation. Maybe my computer just can't handle the whole fcom overhaul deal. BTW, would a usb sound card have hardware acceleration?
Tomlong54210
I have not really looked into them, but I do not see why not. That sort of information is easily available on the peripheral's spec page, so do a search for your model, and you should be able to find out fairly simply. Edit: If you have trouble finding it, post the model here, and I can help. Also, post your Dxdiag for me so that I can see what you are working with. You said you are on a laptop...? When I see "laptop", I always start getting skeptical (about using mods) haha...

My mom (and myself to a degree) have sworn off desktop because of their massive bulk and inherent ability to collect massive amounts of dust. Right now I'm drooling over an Asus gaming laptop with an i5 2.26ghz, 4gb ddr3 ram, and 1gb gddr5 nvidia gts 360m card. Anyway, The sound card is a creative usb cardfound here. The dxdiag is as follows: Vistaamd turion x2 dual core mobile rm-70 (two cpus) 2.0 ghz3836mb ram ati radeon hd 3200internal dac (400mhz)approx total memory 1969mb (all virtual)direct draw accelerationdirect 3d accelerationagp texture acceleration realtek high definition audio
Tomlong54210
Ouch... Okay, no to the HAA, and the system is not for gaming, not real gaming. For "real gaming" you need dedicated VRAM. No wonder your system is overheating. That thing played vanilla Oblivion okay? Yeah... I'd lay off the mods. I definitely would not add mods that really add much content to the game, especially AI packages (with NPC additions.) Game tweaks should be fine, but big enhancements look to be out of the question. Stick to fixes, tweaks, things that change the vanilla game but do not expand it, you know? Otherwise, that system's lifespan is going down the drain with the heat output. Yeeeaaaah, I was beginning to get that impression what with the warm palms while playing. I've actually been able to play it (minimal graphics) with the max number of active mods, including OOO, MMM, Frans, UV, and a whole slew of other mods. I do have it sitting on a cooling mat :), but it crashes whenever I try to load a new game or when I shut Oblivion down. So I'm wondering if I should stick to playing my modded Morrowind and wait until I get a new laptop for oblivion :( :)
Tomlong54210
Running FCOM on that thing is a death sentence, that poor hard-working machine... Vista? really...? no... Drop FCOM and UV. That's crazy on that thing... Edit: FCOM is HUGE on NPC additions.

In fact, I generally have good luck with laptops running games they technically shouldn't be running. I guess you could call me the laptop whisperer (lame, yeah) :) And vista really isn't that bad, I actually like it better than xp.
Tomlong54210
...ewww, no... All I needed to do is look at the page file (something I have a habit of checking out first when I look at machines now...)

I usually check the system properties and the v-card properties. But that Asusgaming laptop would run a heavily modded oblivion fine, wouldn't it? Or do I just need to build my own desktop? Tomlong54210
No. Not the Dxdiag page. I just open up Task Manager and see how much memory the computer is using. You can get a desktop that is about twice as powerful as whatever laptop you could buy at the same price. If all you want mobility an only need good performance, a gaming laptop can run modified Oblivion, if you want much better performance, get a desktop (and save your money.)
