Taunt and Threaten Useless?

I was just at the top of the tower of Ishal with my new archer rogue and even though both dog and Alistair were theatening the ogre and taunting it it spent the whole time chasing my rogue and all I could do is run...eventually I got tired of running and let myself be killed and Alistair finished the Ogre off...

Has this ever happened to other people here?

From what I understand certain classes especially mages gain more hate than most of the other classes even when unprovoked. Not to mention a DPSer is going to attract a lot of attention since they are doing the most amount of damage, Yes this has happened to me countless times but I do not think those abilities are useless in the literal sense because I have managed to make them work quite well in most situations

Ah! So a high DPSer will attract more attention than a super heavy armour guy? Is that programmed into the enemy?

Think of it this way...Your DPSer hits faster and more often (especially with duel weapons) than your tank, so after a few hits you could accumulate more hate from the mob then your tank is able to hold. Also I have read (now I may be mistaken) certain classes start off with a certain amount of hate or aggression from the get go (like mages for instance) The more you do to buff your party or take down a mob gives the player more hate, the trick is to be able to balance the hate/aggro. Ill try to put it in a math equation

Alistar (tank) Each hit adds +2 to hate, hit rate is 1 time every two seconds so +1 to hate every two seconds

Zevran (DPSer Dual weilding) Each hit adds 1 to hate, hit rate is 2 times every second so every second adds +2 to hate....

Now lets throw a variable in this equation "if" your Tank uses the ability Threaten it adds lets just say .5 additional hate every second + his normal hate gain from attacking the target.

Now of course these numbers are just off the top of my head and are not correct I am just giving you an example of how it would work.

Now at this rate your DPSer is doing more damage per second (hence dpser) and gaining more hate from the mob very quickly. While your Tank may be hitting harder he is doing far less damage over time and cannot hold hate for long without a talent to help or having the dpser back off or a bit... i hope that was some help

And as for the tower Ogre depending on what class you chose decides the party set up you have but keep your mage out of the Ogre's AoE (Area of Effect) range and continue to keep your buffs (party beneficial spells) up and the debuffs (Spells that weaken the mob) up while balancing your mana reserve. Dont be afraid to run if you need to and kite (chase the mob with your War/Rouge) if needed.
