Well I listen to anything. Its only middle of the road wallpaper music that really turns me off. I am more interested in Classical than non, though the boundaries are blurring day by day, but am willing to try it all.

The debate of what is good, as opposed to great, mediocre or plain bad is regularly aired in classical music magazines. With the continual chase for the 'unknown' on CD there is a great deal of music being brought out that hasn't been heard for years and one can often hear why. For music that has been around for some time (fifty years maybe after the composers death) the criterion for greatness seems to be how often people want to hear it. Yet that really measures only popularity.

To me 'great' music is any music that has the power to move a large number of people over many years. 'Good' music is anything I'm in the mood for.

Any selection is bound to be personal - and as I said above affected by mood - there are times when I'm quite out of sorts for classical, others when I wouldn't want to hear jazz or soul etc.

One song that continues to move me is The House of the Rising Sun sung by the Animals and that came out long enough ago for me to consider it great. I'll bet there are lots of others who completely disagree though.

Viva individuality, viva freedom of choice!

Adios

House of the Rising Sun had its origin sometime prior to the beginning of the previous century (i.e. 1900). It was in the public domain when Seeger et al recorded it.

I agree that the Animal's arrangement is the best (it's the one I used to play when I was a bad folk singer). However, they screwed up the lyrics big-time.

Rising Sun - traditional term for a brothel. Here are the so-called original words. But as with all folksongs there would have been many versions.

There is a house in New Orleans

They call the Risin' Sun.

Been the ruin of a many a poor gal,

And me, oh, God, I'm one!

If I'd a-listened what mama said

I'd a-been at home today.

Being so young and foolish, poor boy,

I let a gambler lead me astray.

My mother, she's a tailor,

She sewed those new blue jeans.

My sweetheart, he's a drunkard, Lord,

Drinks down in New Orleans.

The only thing a drunkard needs

Is a suitcase and a trunk;

The only time he's satisfied

Is when he's on a drunk.

Fills his glasses to the brim,

Passes them around,

The only pleasure that he gets out of life

Is a-hoboin' from town to town.

Go tell my baby sister

Never do like I have done,

To shun that house in the New Orleans

That they call the Risin' Sun!

One foot's on the platform,

The other on the train,

I'm going back to New Orleans

To wear that ball and chain.

Going back to New Orleans,

My time is almost done;

Going back to spend my life

Beneath that Rising Sun.

As it was sung by a man the words had to be adapted. That only follows tradition.

I like specific artists and songs in every genre out there. If I told you that I hated all of a certain type of music, I would be lying. Of course, because I have not heard all of the types of music out there in the world, this might change.

The type of music I might be interested in listening to might depend on mood on some occations, or nothing specific on others.

Nothing can actually "Define good music"...everyone has their own tastes, meaning different things sounds good to different people...I like all music except for Rap, Jazz, and Opera...
