Looking for a model porting/converting tutorial

I was hoping someone her knows of a good tutorial on converting a mesh from another game into oblivion. I have seen some nice mods for other games I would like to add to oblivion for my own use. If there isn't a totorail if any one could give a rough guideline as to the steps involed it would me much appreciated. The closest thing to a totorial I have seen just involved importing an object file into nifscope add a texture and updating the tangent space. I did this with a set of ears and adjusted the scale and position so they matched the originals but after saving and loading the .nif the game just crashed when loading a save. Thanks for any help in advance.
