video issues?

Hello, Im a pc noob, and i went a lil crazy installing mods! MY issue is that without any mods the game plays through all the cut scenes , but with mods, it locks up. Every origin starter story {SPOILER} locks up at the ending cutscene, like when Mouse turns into the demon. If imanage to make it thru the cutscene 20 mins later.... if it doesnt lock up, then it locks up on the Leliana conversation in Lothering bar etc.

System info; Win7 64 bit os, MSI P35D3 Platinium mobo, 500 gig HD , 8Gigs Ram, Nvidia Geforce 240 video card. All drivers were updated thru driver detective program. I also run nortons AV

I have installed SO many mods... I want the individuality of character creation and play [ I have completed DAO at least 15 times on pc and xbox]

I have the Bioware purchased content, RTO, SP, WK, etc. I als have the CE edition digital DL from Steam.

SO the mods are installed via DAModder { i could never get DAMM to work :( } , I also use the Chargencompiler from terra ex.

Im sorry i told u i went nutty! is any of these items causing the issue ? i have purchased the 64 bit OS and the 8g ram to try and rectify any play issues..... HElp plz! i despertly want new content and variety of toons. thanks soo much! i luv this website btw!

That's a lot of stuff soaking up lots of memory. Plus if that Norton is running, my bet is the available memory is getting slammed causing it to lock up. try turning off Norton once and play those areas and see if it locks. If it doesn't, then you have a memory issue. I used to have that problem on my old system running Norton.

well i ran the game wihtout Nortons running , again it is thru steam , it made it { spoiler} thru the fade SLOOOOOWLY to the dormitory , wher eit promptly locked up. I have oen gig video ram but 8 gig ram on Mobo. if it is a memory issue [ and i have been told dragon age has memory leaks? whatever that means] how is it repaired please? and /or how many mods as rule of thumb may someone install for cohesive running? thanks for your help!

DUH, I didn't catch that Steam part earlier. Sorry. I had that problem also with the Steam version I had when it first came out. It does not like mods very well. I ended up junking it and buying the store version and been happy since. Check with DarkWolfe about this. I think he knows a little about the Steam issues and might be able to help with that.

LOL im totally addicted i have a cd version but for some reason i was never able to redownload any of the paid content [ i bought it thru steam AND thru bioware aka return to ostager etc] so my boyfriend insisted i should keep the steam version as it was " readily dl'd for dlc} so another noob question plz? cna i install BOTH versions or will that cause issues in itself?

Not sure because I never tried it. DA was the first non-Valve game I did through Steam. Once I uninstalled the Steam version, I never tried to re-up it. But I think there would be a conflict because Windows would try to put both into the MyDocuments folder, and I think the conflict would lie there.

I actually have very little, if any idea what goes on with the STEAM version of the game. :sad:

 

First, I'd say try running it after uninstalling the engame epiloges mod and see if that helps any. Remove it from override. If thats not the cause, you can reinstall it afterwards.

 

I also don't know if you can run both versions of the game on the same system. It depends on if the registry entries are the same, or if the steam version has differently named entries. I guess a person could just go ahead and try it, and if it works, it works. If it doesn't that kinda answers that, hahaha. :laugh:

If they do use the same named entries, the installer SHOULD give a message you you already have a version on your system, or give an option to uninstall or repair, in which case it would either uninstall, or upgrade/downgrade the software (game). Which isnt what you wanna do :wink:

 

You'd also probably want to install it to a custom directory. Like create a folder named Dragon Age 2 and have the installer install it to there, instead of the default location.

 

Ok, I did some checking. Both your vid card, and your mobo are both 64 bit compatible. So there shouldn't be an issue there, with it playing with 64 bit OS (windows).

 

Win7 64 bit however, doesnt like to always play well with other software. You can TRY right clicking on the game .exe files located in the program files/dragon age/bin ship folder and choose to run them in compatibility mode with say... xp or vista, and see if that helps any.

 

you could go to nvidia's website and check to see if there are any physX or cuda updates for your card. you could also try updating your directX, but that should be ok/most recent.

 

You could also try turning your graphic settings lower (Medium for graphics and textures) and see if that helps out any. Its in the options tabs when you start the game up.

 

Ram leak- Ok, how to say this without getting TOO technical? Essentially, software is supposed to let go of any RAM usage that it's no longer using (not writing to it's memory, or caching the memory). DAO doesnt do that, it doesnt let it go, or release it. Instead, it fills it up, then moves onto another. Fills that up, then moves onto another. Fills that up, etc.

well i removed several of the mods including those u mentioned, still locks up in the video streaming of the dormitory [ origin quest]. I guess i will try installing the dvd version and praying that works. is there any general rule of thumb about how many mods a person can or should use? thanks for all your help!

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that it wasnt a case of a mod :sad:

Tho hopefully switching over to the regular version of the game solves the problem!

Im about at a loss, it doesnt even run without mods installed now, via the dvd installation [ not thru steam anymore]. Im so fustrated, I have invvested so much to tweak my system up monitarily but I truly dont want to invest in a mobo or chip since mine are fine?

I looked at a few more config options thru DAO and dumbed the graphics down so low [ its like the worst cartoon and blurry ever!] and still it locks up at cut scenes. I have a lil more info, im not sure why it might be important but a fellow WOW player said it might be? I have realtek RTL8 168b/8111B

i tried to opt out of movie playing in config btu i was afraid it would defeat the inner story like {SPOILER} alistairs confession at Redcliff. Im truly out of ideas and my boyfriend refuses to assist me, supposing he could i mean, he keeps laughing telling me I spent 500 dollars for the *k ram and win 7 64 bit and i still cant play the game { i had played it before on xp pro for quite a long time with like 20 mods working thru steam and it lagged our/ locked up and has been since then [ approximately 3 weeks now]

thanks for listening, Im fustrated with no where to turn and almost losing hope, as the geek squad is really kinda idiots [ they looked at my mobo and said OOOO lights! i never seen anything like that..... wasnt inspiring any confidence in me, and sure enough they ran a diagnostic, charged me 65.00 and said we dont know what's wrong with it but u could try buying blah blah and seeing if that helps!}
