Level 30 Bug

Hi, just a newbie in the forum. Ok, straight to the topic.

I have FO3 patched to 1.7 w/ all DLC installed & enabled. Since I use mods that require FOSE (version 1.2beta2; example: WMK + DLC compatibility patches), I always run that program when I want to get to the game (the program is always run through FOMM 0.11.9). The rig:

Windows XP Pro SP3

Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 530 @3.00GHz (stock)

Biostar G31-M7

Pixelview Geforce 8400GS 512MB

Corsair ValueSelect 2GB PC5300

Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2

The problem:

When I tried to level up my character to level 30 (either through gaining XP or console), the game always freezes and forces me to reset the PC (since the screen is covered with the frozen image from the game, and neither Alt-Tab nor getting Task Manager to show up (CTRL-ALT-DEL) work), This happens everytime I tried to level up to 30 (this does not occur on other levels). Also, I tried to do the same thing on my friend's Aspire laptop (running Vista SP2; Fallout 3 1.7 + all DLC w/ FOSE 1.2beta2 + several mods like WMK and Ironsight) w/ the same savefile and the same result (freezes)

NOTE:

The game freezes after I take a perk (ANY perk; tried with Rad Resistance and Almost Perfect)

The character is having a Very Good karma

The locations where this occurs during gameplay:

The Citadel - Lab (through console command)

In front of Vault 101 (after finishing 'Trouble on the Homefront' quest (this adds the XP needed to raise the level))

I used to run Unofficial FO3 patch, but it makes my game crash everytime I tried to save - automatically or manually (since the event where the Enclave shows up in the Memorial - the Pipeline scene)

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks :)

PS: tried to disable all mod and running Fallout 3 without FOSE, but with no luck. Therefore, the problem could be located at either the DLC or the Game itself.

It'd be nice if you uploaded your load order

and possibly your save game

http://pastebin.com/1Xs9j2mP << the load order

http://www.4shared.c...mQRE/Saves.html << some of the saves

PS: tried to level up (w/ console) with some of my old save files, still no luck :(

I think my issue is somewhat similar to this guy (taken from http://fallout.wikia...ugs/Archive_1):

mysterious game crash?

basically i'm 27exp away from levelling, i get the exp, level up some skills, click done, go onto the perk screen aaaaand! freeze! the entire fallout 3 game just stops responding. I wait for it to respond, doesnt respond, i close it and continuously try but it keeps breaking, i even used the console to just set the level and advance the skills. it still crashes....--Glewis

I know that guy (distantly) on another forum. His problem had to do with FOOK (and most other searches I've done for similar problems also seem to point at FOOK). You didn't have it installed beforehand, by any chance? Otherwise it is quite mysterious O.o

I'm going to play around with your save games for a bit, but don't hold your breath or anything

note that if your problem is at all similar to the FOOK folk's, then you will probably have to start a new game. Sorry D:.

Hey, I found a fix! sort of.

I did a "hard reset". Even if you disable a mod, the changes they make might still f*** with your game, so the safest approach is to load the save with the mods disabled, make another save, and load the new save (maybe yo uhave to quit and restart fo3, not sure but I did anyway). Now the references to all the old mods are removed in the new save game. Once I did that, your save worked fine, even with my own gigantic list of mods (75~). Oddly enough, a hard reset with my own mod list still caused a freeze, I ended up disabling everything except fallout.esm. I didn't play around with the DLCs, so there is something you might want to explore.

I know it's not the best fix, because that means you are going to be losing a lot of your modded equipment. However, I'd recommend trying a hard reset with disabling only a mod or two at a time, starting with that 99 level cap. But then again, when I did a hard reset with my own mod list (I use a level cap workaround, not the 99 one) it still froze... well at this point I can't give any more advice, you'll have to go by trial and error for yourself. At least now you know the problem is fixable. Good luck!

From your last post, you mentioned FOOK, which me myself have never installed or used.

FYI, I installed the level 99 cap AFTER the game keeps freezing whenever I tried to level up, since I thought that'll make some difference *smack*

Anyway, I'll try your method. Oh, about the items, I think I'm going to 'spawn' them using the console (since the list is not really much either :P). For DLCs, I think it'll be fine to 'redo' these (I finished Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta, the latter without all the recordings)

I think I'm getting the 'guilty' DLC causing the crash. When I tried to disable Anchorage, I could easily level up w/o any freezes. Gonna re-download this DLC, since I don't wanna miss the Chinese Stealth Armor :P

Thanks for the method :)

Had the exact problem a few days back after installing Fallout 3 and loading a save game on a new computer. The game crashes after taking a perk. For me, installing the unofficial patch fixed the thing easily, probably a broken steel bug.
