Hello Nexus forums!

I've just finished the original DA campaign (yeah, it took a while :) work kept me thousands of miles away from my desktop pc, literally), and already started a new warden, awaiting my order (awakening) to arrive. I was just wondering, are there any mods for this game available? Back in the Baldur's Gate days there were loads of them. A quick google brought me to this page directly. So, to the point:

I've been browsing mods and then the forum, but failed to find any generic information which seemed to be up-to-date (could be my fault, absolutely). So if you could answer a few basic questions for me (or point me to a reliable FAQ), I would be very grateful.

The questions are like: should I do a fresh install before installing any DLCs/ awakening before installing any mod? Are mods compatible with awakening/ DLCs in general? Which official (or unofficial) patch should I install, before installing mods? Which modmaganer should I use? (there is more than one I take it) Will I be able to use my saved games after installing mods? What are the common mistakes made when installing lots of mods? What is the meaning of life??

... and things like that :)

If it turns out that I'm just blind, then admins please, delete away ;)

Heyas, and welcome to the nexus forums!

Meaning of life... you're on your own for that one. Whatever purpose you find for your life is what is best suited for you

Ok now, to be serious....

Patch 1.02 is probably as high as you want to patch. UNLESS you install Awakening, or the new Darkspawn Chronicals DLC. Patch 1.03 has numerous issues wrong with it (hence teh 18+ page bugs threads over at social.bioware). So unless you install either of those, just patch to 1.02

-Dont let the game manually patch. it will patch itself all the way to full. Hunt around the net, find patch 1.02 and manually install it.

No, you don't need to do a fresh install. You can add mods and DLC anytime that you want to. (Unless you're at patch 1.03 then I "might" suggest it).

Awakening changed some of the stuff. So "Some" mods are compatible with it, others are not. And some others have been updated TO be compatible with it. Also, awakening has an entirely different map, so some of the stuff that change the vanilla DAO game just dont apply to DAA because the area they are in, isnt there in the expansion.

I personally prefer damodder http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=286

tho damodmanager http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=250 is also a good one. And needed for install of a few mods like natural bodies all in one (nude bods mod)

Yep, you can use your savegames when installing new mods. However, when UNinstalling mods and loading a savegame you will have to tell the game to go ahead and force the load. After doing a force load, I recommend creating a new, clean save immediately afterwards.

You can still create new characters. HOWEVER, some of these mods don't load correctly on new characters. Its not the mods fault, its a bug with the game. To try to avoid this issue, when you create a new character DEACTIVATE all of your armor, weapon, and gear mods. Then start the new character in the game, play it till you can reach a save point, save it. Then shut down the game, reactivate your mods, and play normally.

One thing is that a lot of mods that change gameplay, such as revamping the combat system, making changes to the spells systems, etc arent always compatible. So you may run into issues there with some of them playing well together.

Also, hair, face, eyes, tints/tones mods have to be altered in order for them to work together. They all use a file called chargenmorphcfg.xml and the game will only read one of those files, instead of more than one. So in that case, you have to compile the different mods' files together into one file. THIS is a VERY handy tool for doing that. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=971

happy gaming

Glad to hear that you're not having any issues. Hahahaha yeah....its funny how fast that mod list can grow, and grow, and grow.....

Have fun, DA is a really great game to play. (When it works...)
