Oblivion Vs Morrowind

My apologies for reviving a thread a few months old. :P

I was looking for the topic to express my disapointment of Oblivion. Now I'm completely new to the Elderscrolls series, I haven't played Daggerfall and older games at all. About 8 months ago I was looking for an rpg game to pass the time and was bummed that my computer at the time couldn't support all the new yummy games coming out. Oblivion looked like it would have been my answer, but since I coudn't run I decided to try Morrowind. It was on sale with all the expansions, yay! So I install it and didn't even spend 30 mins on it. The graphics totally threw me off, I thought it would have been more lush, the faces were sooo ugly ect.. Now this was before I learned about the mods...

So summer comes by, I get a new PC (w00t) I buy Oblivion. Oh dreams of dreams it's lush and beautiful! Well mostly, the character creation is kinda of a downer, I hated the face gen sliders honestly.. The quests at frist I really liked, but then it took a few weeks and the main quest was over, what the hell? So I started doing all the little side quests, I discovered mods, and oh boy the difference!! Then I started to wonder, why didn't Bethesda make the game this good to begin with? Why do I need to install completely new textures and sound? Didn't they try? Was it worth to hire hollywood voice acting when a few more actors period would have brought more life and realism? No expansion packs even hinted at? Just crummy 2.00$ micro donwloads? Are you kidding me? So begins the disenchantement..

So while I'm downloading all these Oblivion mods, I notice all these great Morrowind mods, and I think to myself what if I make the game aethestically more appealing to me? What would happen? Well what happened is I'm playing and loving Morrowind, it's diverse, it's immersive and has lore that seems that have been written by people with passion for their game, not people paid a big fat paycheque and just waiting for the next project. I love the look of Morrowind, it's not so usual like in Oblivion. And basically I'm wondering why didn't Bethesda put in the same effort so obvious in Morrowind in Oblivion? It seems like it was rushed somehow and to depend on modders to make a game great is subpar, as was mentioned, at the time of it's release I imagine I could have played Morrowind as is whithout mods for some time since I wouldn't have been spoiled by amazing cgi.. But Oblivion, well it's not much whithout mods, that's sad.

I simply loved Morrowind's story line, almost as much as Kotor's I. Oblivion's story line however, simply *sucked*, in my oppinion... Sure, Oblivion had better graphics, nice gamepley tweaks, pretty people. But Morrowind delivered the satisfaction of a good RPG, Good Quests. And I kinda miss all those skills and spells that where removed.

My two cents.

At first I didn't like Oblivion but the more I played it the more I've come to enjoy the game.

Morrowind does some things better then Oblivion.

1. I like the skill set-up a lot better. Having Enchant as a skill makes a lot of sense to me, especially since you have to pay to enchant an item in Oblivion. Also digged the Spear skill for role playing.

2. Alot more quests, spells and items to discover but this might be corrected in time with mods and expansions for Oblivion.

The things I liked better about Oblivion.

1. NO CLIFF RACERS. I hate these things with a vengence.

2. Much improved combat/physics system. Though not perfect, it's going in the right direction.

3. The visuals are top notch IMO, especially the Daedric levels when the portals start popping up.

As far the quality of quests goes I believe this has more to due with quantity then quality but I will agree with other posters in saying that when it comes to main quests, Oblivion (though decent) didn't have the shear size or immersion that Morrowind had. This is too bad as Terence Stamp's voice over for Mankar Camoran made the character sound interesting, at the end of the Paradise level I wish you had the option to ask questions or create some kind of dialogue with him as you could with Dagoth Ur.

You're forgeting that Oblivion has sheaths and quivers, and that if some weapons don't have them, they just hang from your belt, and that people talk instead of standing there with a box in front of their face. However, I've come to hate Imps with a passion.

A moderator will lock this, I bet.

Wouldn't it be brilliant if there was a mod or a game which mixes the magic of morrowing with the beauty and size of oblivion.

Then you could have alomst double the size, all the greatness of morrowind mixed with the textures and new things of oblivion. Oh skooma, you were such a big hit in morrowind why not oblivion (btw i love skooma).

If you mixed those together it would surely make goty, but it will have to have new features like more places, different places, more quests.

I know there is little in the way of gore but there is a mod that adds a lot of blood, but it is still lacking. I too wanted to behead and dismember my foes. But someone needs to make a mod for that and we modders just found out how to make animations. I hate Bethesda for not putting crossbows in Oblivion. Will someone make that mod! Morrowind is better than Oblivion for its shear size. But Morrowind's mods are far bigger and far more expansive; but give the modders a break geez! Its not like we can crate a mod that adds 10 new cites in one week! It take a lot longer than that. So give us some time and better and bigger mods will come out for Oblivion. Morrowind is better now, but Oblivion is gonna be better in the end. We modders are making bigger and better mods as fast as we can. Just trust us k'? Thx. BobaFett911 :)

But, on Oblivion, you can cast while holding a shield (as in, not needing to ready your magic!) or a weapon (or both, or nothing, you can cast anywhere except in those things when the hub is disabled and you have a silence effect on you.

  • 2 weeks later...

All as ill say is daggerfall is still the best of the bunch for gameplay and roleplaying, its fun instaling arena from me floppy disk's and morrowind i was surprised how they changed some of the ideas.

A pain finding monsters kill to lvl up but i liked the game.

Have reinstaled again and still play daggerfall even with it's fault's but oblivion prity graphic's no gameplay, as the game has nothing to recomend it.

What we have is games now prity graphics no gameplay as most software houses have cottoned onto fact that most players today dont want gameplay just prity graphic's.

Bethseda will never realese daggerfall as they no full well people will see how it blows oblivion away and if you get chance to own game get it, as i have 2 daggerfall's and the book's that were added third party.

You be surprised the sort of money i get offered to sell 1 of them.

I already own oBLIVOIN BUT NOT MORROWWIND. IS IT WORTH ME BUYING MORROWWIND OR NOT

Yes. Morrowind has 9 playable factions, and a much longer lifetime than oblivion (IMO)

There are some fantastic mods out there. You can download all kinds of texture replacements to make the game look better. And there are some fantastic quest and realism mods out there.

The only thing that is getting used to after playing Oblivion is the combat system. There is a special "combat" and "magic" mode. You can't cast spells and hit enemies with a sword simultaniously. And you can "miss" your opponent when attacking. Blocking is automatic. In short, Morrowind's combat system is less action, and more RPG orientated. It's nice, but you gotta adapt for a while when you've played Oblivion.

I say: Buy it, mod it, play it, love it.
