* If you are having a "texture" problem, check you have "ArchiveInvalidation" enabled.

  • Open your mod manager.
  • Mod Organizer (MO): Select your "Profile". Turn on "Automatic Archive Invalidation" in the "Configure Profiles" dialog. Close the mod manager.
  • Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM): Depending on the version you have, find "Archive Invalidation" either under the tools tab or find the button "Toggle Archive Invalidation".
  • Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) or the newer Fallout Mod Manager - Forked (FOMM): if there is a "check mark" shown next to "Archive Invalidation", remove it and close the mod manager. Open the mod manager, open the "Tools" and place a "check mark" next to "Archive Invalidation".

If there is not a "check mark" next to "Archive Invalidation", place one there and close the mod manager.
  • Wrye Flash (WF): click on the "Installers" tab, then right-click on the "Package" column header (gray bar) and click to place a "check mark" on the "BSA Redirection" context menu entry. Then right-click on the "Package" column header again and select "Anneal All".
  • For other texture problems, see the TESTG Troubleshooting section.

Even if you activated "ArchiveInvalidation" before, you may need to do so again (turn-off and then back-on).

Re: red vs purple. While both statements are true, they are not mutually exclusive. The red exclamation points can appear for SOME missing texture situations as well. (It varies by Bethesda's implementation of a given game.) The Purple appearance seems to only occur with "missing texture files", but so do some other colors. Still, it is a good general guideline. Just less certain than it appears on the surface or we might wish.

You are right. Although I've never seen or heard about the ! for a missing texture only, it doesn't mean it can't appear in certain situation.

You are helping people much more intensively than I do, so I'll rely on your experience.

In FO3 or FNV:

For missing textures, depending on the object and the situation, I've experienced the Purple appearance, semi invisible object or chameleon textures (same as with ArchiveInvalidation).

For missing meshes I've only experienced the ! (and CDT).

So my statement was a bit short and, as you say, can be taken as a general rule knowing that exceptions do exist.

! is missing mesh, and unloaded textures for bodies tend to show purple. You'll get kaleidoscope textures on random things when they can't be loaded. Cells will fail to load and you'll fall through the void.

This is almost always too many plugins in your load order as already mentioned. Merge some plugins (patches can be easily merged) or uninstall some mods. This can also corrupt saves so you should use a save from before it happened.

If you are using Millenia's weapons , don't uninstall them or your game will fail to load because they use a script command which permanently puts them in the form and leveled lists.

On rare occasion this can also be caused by a badly made bsa or corrupted files.

Another question If using Wrye do i have to run NVSE through Wrye & also do still have to have AI turned on in Vortex? I may figure it out before a response but might help others. Thank You

NVSE is a "extension" library of functions. As such it is installed and should always be present (much like the FalloutNV.ESM). Due to where it needs to go (under it's own, non-standard folder under "Data") it typically needs to be manually installed (not through a mod manager). Please see the 'Checklist Item #4' entry in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

Only use the "ArchiveInvalidation" feature of one mod manager. They each use different filenames for the "AI" file and multiples cause problems. Just turn it off in all other managers than the one you prefer, and then toggle that one to make sure it picks any changes to "loose files".

As you mention Vortex, you may or may not be aware that it's AI has to first be installed as a "mod", and then toggled on. I just recently updated that information in the 'Mod Managers' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.
