mod compatibilty problems in win7

Recommended Posts

I am NOT a noob in oblivion modification. I work with the cs for over 3 years and I am NOT dumb.

Hey, i have a problem. I installed "windows7 Enterprise" from my dad's work. Everything works fine on win7. Then I install my legal Oblivion and the OBCS (oblivion construction set). In win7 you can choose on an application/map/file/... at 'properties' - 'compatibility'. So then you can run progams like they are on a xp or a vista or a 98. Well i forget to set the CS and the oblivion in compatibility under XP. (because oblivion and his cs are not official made for win7.) Now i put a whole month into making a landscape with rocks and ground texture. But the problem is that I saved and tested that all under 'compatibility win7'. -> PROBLEM. Because if i finish my mod and i uplaod it on TESNEXUS then people with vista or xp will NOT be able to play the mod. So I changed the CS and oblivion compatibilty. I succesfully loaded the mod in the cs with 'compatibilty XP'. But when i saved it (also tryed new esp) then I wasn't be able to play my mod in Oblivion with 'compatibilty XP'. And yes, I checked my mods in the oblivion launcher. And yes, I did compatibiltyed the launcher AND the exe. I don't want to remake my mod. So can someone please help me?

As you said Oblivion was made for WinXP and Not Vista. In Vista Microsoft added UAC to protect the files in the program files folders from being changed without an administrators permission. Just running as an Administrator will not work. you Must either right click on each one and select run as admin, do away with UAC (Not recommended) or move Oblivion and its associated programs outside of the protected area. Most people have been installing to C:\Games\Oblivion

The game uninstall doesn't really uninstall everything, and if it is not all uninstalled before a new install it can cause problems.

If you are not sure how to uninstall and reinstall without losing saves, mods and other stuff. Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Thnx , I'll try to instal oblivion in an other place.

Hopefully my mods will work then when I run Oblivion with xp compatibility.

Ty for the tutorial, but my IQ (136) is high enough to know how to uninstall oblivion with his components. (and I already did once)

IQ has nothing to do with being able to uninstall properly as Bethesda made it difficult. Leave out the registry cleaning or do something out of order and you may not be able to reinstall because it will still think the game is installed due to a corrupt registry entry that the game uninstaller cannot fix. And if you can reinstall, it may still look for files in the wrong place because of an obsolete reference in the registry. IQ does not measure common sense. Actually all it is is a number that tells how well you can do on standardized tests. I am very good at taking standardized tests also. But 6 decades of real life has beat a little common sense into me as well (I hope it is enough)

Please don't think my procedure is condescending, it is intended for people who actually don't know much about computers. However that does not mean it cannot be used by experts as well. The idea is to publish something that people of any skill level can use instead of having one for neophytes, one for intermediate one for advanced and one for people who know more than me - that one is blank because there is nothing I can tell them anyway.

my IQ is 136 and i am in a lower grade of school (tso called)

Weird? No, because i cant explain/tell everything i think.

But someone with a iq of 136 will be able to know something like this (oblivion install)muche faster then someone with an iq of 90.

Btw, the 'SLB' (governement students following/helping) test me.

Yes i know, the world is strange
