vegtabill
Greetings, I have a quick question about endorsements... or, more specifically, how you track whether a file was downloaded by a user or not. I have downloaded tons of mods from TES Nexus. I typically wait a while before I endorse it, wanting to be sure it is what I expected and that is works well. Much of the time though, I am told that I can't endorse a file because I haven't downloaed it. I assumed that you tracked this by login, but perhaps that was a wrong assumption? I frequently download from at least 2 different locations on 2 different machines... are downloads possibly linked to IP addresses instead of logins? Just curious... sometimes re-downloading and then waiting the obligatory 3 hours or so just is not practical. OK, I promised praise... by and large, the recent improvements to the site have been very noticeable and very positive. Little things like the banners on top of the pages (especially the new one that shows up in the download dialog) have really breathed new life into the site. The search seems to function a little better now as well (that might just be me... I've been paying more attention to search engine results in general lately). All in all, it's really coming along nicely. Kudos! veg
HugePinball
Most likely you're downloading some files while not logged in. By chance, are the files it later said you hadn't downloaded smaller than 2 MB? If so, you wouldn't have been prompted to log in before downloading. Another possibility is that you downloaded the files from mirror links. Only links on the Files tab count. Down the right side of the page (just above Image Share), your Download/rating history will show you... well, everything you've downloaded and rated while logged in. vegtabill
OK, thanks for the reply. I did check my history, but since I'm not a premium member it only shows the last month (that's kind of disappointing, by the way... and definitely does not make me want to buy a premium membership). I have found that typically when I bring up TESNexus, it will remember that I was logged in from last time (cookies, I assume?). However, I have also noticed that if I then go to the forum I will need to log in again. I had assumed this was due to not having a single sign-on feature (not a big deal at all, by the way), but is it possible that I was not actually logged in even though it said I was? I am actually pretty aware of stuff like that (Web applications are what I do for a living), so I am pretty sure that not being logged in is not the issue unless, as stated, the site can erroneously tell you you're logged in when you're not. It's really not that big of a deal. It's just a little more tedious to rate a modder's work than I would prefer. Incidentally, I never saw this issue with the old rating system. Thanks again, veg EDIT: spelling
HugePinball
Well it's always possible there was/is some odd site issue that caused this for you - like the server losing or not saving your download history - but I always go for what seems most likely to me first, in this case either not being logged in or downloading from mirror links. About being logged in: Notice that on the file site pages there is not much to inform you whether you're logged in or not, especially if you're a normal member (non-premium or non-supporter). There's only the links at the top (Login/Register or Logout/Member Area) and the Members section down the right side of the page showing your username, which might not even be visible without scrolling down a bit. It might be a good suggestion to move that menu section up on the page, or otherwise make you login status more apparent. Oh, there's also the chat bar at the bottom of the window now too (unless you've turned it off) - that of course only appears if you're logged in. Anyway, while it's possible an unrefreshed page might show you logged in when something has caused you to be logged out on the server (session timeout or whatever), I highly doubt that you'd then be able to download a file larger than 2MB without being prompted to log in first. If you're sure that is happening, that would be a serious site problem which you should continue to report so it can be fixed.
vegtabill
Yes, the first thing I look at when I go to TESNexus is whether or not I see the "logout" link. If I do, then I am logged in. More often than not I do. I don't think I've ever been able to download a file larger than 2MB without being logged in, but that's not really what I was reporting (though I can see how the issues are related). If I ever do, I'll be sure to let someone know. Thanks again!
vegtabill
Just to follow up on this, yesterday I downloaded ANB Item Switcher from home. The page had "logout" and "member area" links, indicating that I was logged in. Today, here at work, my history does not show that I downloaded that file, and I can not endorse it. It would appear that something is causing this to not work correctly. Again, it's not that big of a deal... just thought I would let you guys know.
