Transparent textures

Hello everyone,

I made some sunglasses a while ago that I uploaded to the Nexus, but I wasn't really happy with how they turned out. Since it's not transparent with gloss maps applied, it looks more like metal than plastic (which is not the look I was going for). So looking at some of the vanilla glasses I figured it might be a good idea to make mine more transparent with a dark tint instead of reflective like I had them before.

Does anyone know how to do this? Is there a transparency map slot in nifskope? Or do I just make it so that in Photoshop it's see-through and that translates over to the .dds file?

The transparency is set in the NiAlphaProperty via the Flags and the Threshold in conjunction with the amount of transparency set in PS on the .dds file.

What is a "gloss map" for you?

Are you referring to :

- Specular Map (added with the Alpha channel of the Normal Map)

- Glow Map ( which actually is a mask)

- EnvCube Map ( adding a reflection of the environment, can be tweaked in the .nif and have a mask to hide parts)

You set a certain amount of transparency on part of your texture, then by tweaking the flags and threshold, this part show different type of transparency.

Also, for the EnvCube map, you can play with the Envmap Scale in the BSShader and have a mask that hide or make the reflection more subtle.

Which mesh are you based on?

That's pretty cool, I'm gonna have to play with that. What exactly do I change with the Flags and Thresholds to make it transparent?

I think I have all my settings at good levels, but for some reason in-game it never shows up the way I want it to. I used the Authority Glasses as my base mesh since I wanted the glasses to be more reflective and (as far as I can recall) didn't change any of the settings.

Another issue I'm having is that the specular map is reflecting EXTREMELY badly, like when you're facing towards a light source the entire mesh will turn white. Is this a common problem?

I uploaded the glasses with this mod in case you have the time or feel the need to look at it the actual mesh if you want.
