I would like to see more about Mage Factionalism...

Unless the expansion was pretty much mage specific it would merely be an interesting diversion. What real purpose would it serve? I would rather see the creative energies spent on the main storyline and not circle politics IMO.

You stated your opinion, I stated mine. The fact those opinions differ is not mean, it is simply different. Someone else may see it differently than either of us. Our differing opinions is what makes all of us unique, just like everybody else :teehee:

I was kidding, you know. AND I did mean this as a mage specific thing...

I know, it's all good.

We do get the conversation with the mage in the tower that explains it all in fairly simplistic terms. Are you hoping for some cut scene with a bunch of mages all debating their views or something more than that? Seems the last debate they got into almost caused the annulment of the tower. Hoping for a large scale mage revolt?

Actually, yes. I would like to see a separate expansion focusing on mages but that is just me.

Ok, for the sake of discussion, lets run with this a bit. We have (copy & pasted from the wiki):

  •

  • Aequitarians - They are the dominant faction in Ferelden's Circle and promote a moderate and popular viewpoint that advocates a set of rules and guidelines for mages to live and operate by. They believe that all mages should help people and follow a set of ideals.(Members: Senior Enchanters Torrin, Wynne, and First Enchanter Irving).
  • Loyalists - They follow the Chantry's word as it is written. Often called "Chantry apologists" for accepting the Chantry/Templars ever present observation. They are allied with the Aequitarians.
  • Lucrosians - They believe that mages and their talents should be used for monetary gains.
  • Isolationists - Wish to separate themselves from Templars, Chantry and indeed civilization in order to practice magic without scrutiny. Possibly "on an island somewhere". (Members: Niall)
  • Libertarians - They desire that the Circle will eventually become an autonomous, self regulating order without Chantry involvement at any level. They form the largest opposition to the Aequitarian-Loyalist alliance (Members: Uldred)
  • Formari - The Tranquil belong to this group and do all the enchanting and trading on behalf of the Circle.

I think we can rule out the Formari from this discussion as they are barely drones and they are not savant dwarves. The Lucrosians and Isolationists are weak and/or self-serving, being either wimps or fortune seekers that would have little to gain from any power struggle between the others (although the Lucrosians could gain profit from the misfortune of the others if they could find a way.) The main struggle would most certainly be between the Loyalists and the Libertarians with the Aequitarians attempting to maintain the balance and the focus would (or at least should) be on the debate among them as they will be the ones to sway the balance.

So now we have a game that pits the Loyalists against the Libertarians with the Aequitarians trying to maintain the balance. These would be the main factions (substituting for races) in this expansion (mod?) Ok, now what are we going to do about the chantry? They are certainly not going to stand by and just watch this happen. According to the codex, the Rite of Annulment has been performed 17 times in the last 700 years and we shouldn't expect them to put up with the revolt that is sure to be forthcoming. A breakout quest? Find the other towers and convert them? Where does it go?

In retrospect, perhaps I shouldn't have ruled out the Lucrosians and Fomari. The Lucrosians could dominate the Fomari while the others argue and make weapons and other implements of mass destruction to wipe out the others while they fight among themselves to gain power.

Am I at least close to where you are going with this?

Actually you did a better job than I....

  • 3 weeks later...
If a Mage asked for Ferelden's ruler to emancipate the Circle, then it might inspire the other Circles in Thedas to break away from the Chantry (what I think Wynne's conversation in Awakening was supposed to be about, with the slight oversight of the writer forgetting about the Magi Royal Boon). It's likely this might be further explored in a sequel.
