SpellAndShield
Goodness knows, I am neither prude nor innocent, but there are other angles to consider here. Take what I said about in my university days, the red light areas of my university city coincided with the student quarter. That's pretty typical in the UK, red light areas often equal the poorer areas. Remember, someone has to live next to these establishments. Making brothels legal would in all probability make it even harder for non-involved local residents to get any redress if harassed. It would just be an excuse for an inert police service to whine "Well it's a legal brothel, hard luck that you're too poor to move away from it..." And these days if you were to do what I once did to a man who came leering up to me "Lookin' for business darlin'" when I was a student, ie punched him hard in the groin (well if you WILL pick on a member of the ladies' rowing eight...), you'd get arrested. It would also be naive to assume that the underworld figures who run the prostitutes now would just go away, they'd be laughing their socks off at the brothels being legal and still, on the quiet, pushing their drugs onto the working girls to keep them working, and onto the customers too. And with the porn, the more mainstream it gets, I fear the further the boundaries of what is acceptable would be pushed. And the further even adults in consenting relationships would feel they had to go, even if they themselves were uncomfortable with what their partner wanted. In effect, it could be construed as removing the right to say no. People have different desires/tastes. And there are some things that should never be acceptable, child porn and snuff/torture stuff. The bottom line is that prohibition does not work for anything and when you prohibit something, you inevitably get more of it. Look at the American prohibition of the twenties. One of the reasons why Mexico is in such a terrific mess these days is the fact that we have this idiotic 'Drug War' going on. The drug war raises the stakes, pushes up prices and makes crime worthwhile because the profits are so vast, which in turn makes murder a viable option for those in the way of those profits. If you legalised and normalised prostiution, it would become less dangerous for the people who chose the profession as well as for clients. There could be companies that sponsor them and would run STD tests, etc. Disappear completely? No, but reduction, yes. Rape would likely also be reduced as men who would be likely to engage in rape would have a viable alternative to fufill their sexual desires. They would merely have to pay for it like any other service. What are the boundaries of what is acceptable? We live in the reality we live in and we need to make it as livable as possible. Barring violence, consenting adults should be permitted to do whatever they want to do.
SpellAndShield
It would be good to remind you that 'love' was never important in the past; most marriages were arranged and based on convenience, practicality, etc. Love never had anything to do with it. Love is thus a relatively new concept as is the idea of the 'romantic' relationship. I doubt women being more 'whorish' in the bedtime would have a significant effect on anything; having sex with the same person for years and years, is, per se, boring and love it should be noted is just as biochemical as anything else. Research has established that as a fact. Love dies when the biochemistry dies and all one is left with is custom and habit. In fact, love is no different than eating large quantities of chocolate. There are many practical reasons for legalising prostitution and/or allowing 'reading material' to be more open. Crime would drastically be reduced as it would no longer be as dangerous for either the prostitute or the client and there would be no worry about law enforcement. On the whole, people would begin to accept the realities which surround them as opposed to pretending they either do not exist or represent some ineffable evil. Ha you must be joking, love is ever more important to day than ever before, 99% of music out there and the majority of films and literature have their main topic as love, it is the main ideal next to money that is relevant in our society today, it is quite irrelevant as to what relationships in the past were based upon - this is the here and now - and so this is what counts. If I or anyone else allows you to take our eyes off this then you have succeeded in your folly. Crime would be reduced - hahahaha - could you please send me a bit of what you're smoking because I also need an out of this body experience and live in fantasy land. Please come to South Africa or anywhere else in the "real world" for that matter - this is so funny - and let's see whether or not "crime will be reduced because of legalised prostituition".Besides most of those who are involved in prostituition will tell you that thay wish they had better jobs but that they have been "reduced" to this ... not even they want this. Strip clubs (like Hooters in the USA and now also in ZA) only exist because business men need to take their clients out "for a good time" at year end or because a bunch of guys want to go and "check out" the chicks at Hooters, "cause man they've got uh really big Hooters" lmao.Ask me, I'm in business and I see my managers taking the clients to South Africa's equivalent called Teazers.Otherwise they're as relevant as another hole in the head ... Thanks for the fun topic - this is my last reply here - South Africa is an extreme example. I have known many South Africans, all expats. You are very brave to stay there. Vagrant0
I don't know if it was brought up since I didn't bother to read many of the too-long posts in the thread, but I think people are ignoring one rather important part about what makes porn so interesting. Porn is interesting primarily because it is NOT accepted by society. It doesn't matter what the porn is, so much as it is something which gives us that little guilty pleasure that we then feel we have to hide from everyone else. If you remove the guilt, the wrongness, the dirty from things we define as porn, those things will lose almost all interest since it becomes accepted, mundane, and therefore boring. As a result, people will actively search out new, more unusual things to get aroused about that is not accepted by society. Those involved in the industry at the higher levels understand this, and base a fair amount of their business around it. People will still pay to have sex, but the more nudity you see, the less it tends to effect your arousal.
Coous
Prohibition failed for many reasons like for one it's pretty impossible to stop your whole country from doing any act of illegal producing, and people are growing and making illegal stuff all the time it's a real unrealistic goal to stop it. The roaring twenties was also the wrong era to even attempt something like that in the first place, and drinking has been a long established part of life in this country you won't break that tradition ever. Also when HASN'T Mexico been in a terrible shape anyways especially ever since we went in there in early 1900's and screwed it up even more. I must agree that most prohibition if not all really doesn't work, but nothing isn't going to stop the already established people making money especially if you make it legal for them to do it anyways very minor changes will come of it. Does the fact that pizza is legal and buyable and well out in the open prevent people from enjoying it? No, the same could be applied to porn, etc. I don't think guilt is the major factor here...something else is.

It is exactly that some people do this because they want to feel the guild of doing something amoral that drives them to do this. Often than not it is in their unconscious mind. Balagor
Pornography and sex for sale became visible in Denmark during the -70th. You can now see it in every mainstreet in big cities. It does not makes it less perverted, nor less humilliating for the girls and boys who offer their "skill".We have seen even 15 years old girls offering sex, not because they are drug addicts, no they come from ordinairy homes, no they do that to increase their pocket money, to buy stuff like I-pads, I-phones. This of cause is a biproduct of a twisted society. We also see all the poor girls and boys, drug addict, or other sad "numbers in the society" selling their body for less than nothing, doing the most perveted thing to satisfy a just as perveted and screwed up old pig of a man (yes it is mostly old men) who needs a shrink more than a hooker.Sex like that is just a physical need, like scracthing your bag when it´s itchy. You can do that your self, unless your arm is too short. Real sex comes out of love, if anybody knows this word theese days.In Denmark we have tried this now for 40 years, and it is really a pitty to look at. It has even created a bigger market, envolving kidnapping and enslaving from Somalia, Africa. Girls are promised good jobes here, then they get locked up in a month, filled with heroine, to make them addicted, and then the have to "work" for the dope.So if you really want your Sin-City, go on and try to liberate porn, and humilliated girls. We tried in vain.

Everything is an exchange of goods and society is no more twisted than it has always been. I don't think there is anything humilating about prostitution. I have known male 'call boys' who have earned extraordinary amounts of money being prostitutes. They had regular jobs as well and did not do it as a last resort by any means.
