Mod conflicts

I'm using DAModManager which tells you if 2 or more mods conflict.

My question is if the modder hasn't mentioned anything about conflicts is there a way to compare the files and find the conflict yourself?

heyas Ell

well, it all kinda depends on the mods. As we know from the issues with the chargen morphs... any two mods which use the same filenames are going to come into conflict and thus have to be compiled together in order for them to work.

And sometimes two completely different files from two mods which reference the same resources can come into conflict. Not real sure how to handle that one.

K, to check the majority of these files, what you need to do is compare them. Some of them you can compare in notepad, but some of the others, you have to compare in the toolset.

IF the files are packed up in .erf files, you will need to Drag N Drop the .erf files into the toolset, and then choose the one you want to look at, right click it, and choose export choose a location that is easy to find, and save it (I have a special folder on my desktop especially for this). Then drag and drop the saved copy back into the toolset. Or click file/open then browse to the location that you saved the file to.

If they are packed up in a .zip or a .dazip file, you'll first need to extract them. If they're .zip .rar .7z or whatnot, thats easy. Just right click on the mod file and choose one of the extraction options for whichever program you're using.

if they are in a .dazip file.... what you'll need to do first is right click on it, choose RENAME and change the .dazip to .zip. then follow the steps to unzip it and put it into the toolset if necessary.

:whistling: I think I'll give the toolset a miss for now, I haven't even opened it yet let alone started to learn how to use it.

I was on the right track by the sound of it, I made a folder on my desk top and copied folders etc over into that then I used the search option and went for certain files, with my fingers crossed I wasn't going to get a list so long it would take forever to look through them. Then I swapped the edited folders/files out with the ones in my override folder and ran the game, everything seems to work OK so I've left them there are deleted the files I took out, but don't worry being the back up freak I am  I have a folder where the original downloads go and I never make changes to those unless they are updated here.

I needed to ask here in case windows or something had a function that would look for duplicate files, actually that reminds me I did have a freebie that did that a long time ago, but the problem was you couldn't specify that it should only look at a particular drive which meant all my files had duplicates.

I have asked the modder who made the DAModmanager program if it would possible for the program to identify the offending files, but that could be asking too much.

Ahhh, I see. hahaha. Toolset really isn't all that intimidating (when it works...) up until you start to get into some of the more complex stuff. Just opening and looking at files and making minor edits to them, really isnt that much different than doing it in any other program (other than the HUGE drains of RAM).

Hahaha Yeah, I've got a copied folder on mine too. The saves are a subfolder in there.

Good to hear that things are ok!

Winblows itself doesnt look for the copies. When it does a disk cleanup, it pretty much just looks for broken files, links that are no longer there (such as temp shortcuts, to files which have been deleted) and files that are marked as deleted. The after market software tho, yeah... some of those CAN detect and delete duplicate files.

What kinds of mods are you having trouble with?

When I used DAModmanager to install ZDF, CRS and Mild Romance as overrides, it flags them as conflicting. I did follow the instructions for installing to the letter. Since then I have bypassed DAMM and installed them manually and everything seems to be working fine, so I either did something silly and couldn't see what or DAMM has got it's k*s in a twist.

It didn't help that trying and eventually succeeding in removing DAMM set Firefox in a spin and I got an error message flashed up something about a virus !!!!!!!!!! but it came and went so quickly I didn't get a chance to read it all. I won't bore you with the whole saga which dragged on for so long I thought my head would explode and my contacts dried up from not blinking

So that was my Friday evening and all day Saturday over, what about you   at this rate I'll never get time to learn the Toolset.

I should also thank you for something you said in a thread recently about disabling mods before starting a new game and then turning them back on or reinstalling that has solved all my fancy armour mod problems, so thank you again for such good advice and help.

awww, I'm sorry to hear that you've had such an ordeal

Ok, yeah... I'd seen your thread about the ZDF and CRS, but I dunno what those two mods are, so I couldnt comment. What are the full names of them? Perhaps I could DL them and take a look at them. (In my mind, CRS stands for Cant Remember *cough* Stuff *cough* which I am afflicted of, QUITE often.

Hrmmmmmmmmm. I wonder why Firefox would be affected by that? its a completely different kind of program. Didnt you also have a message pop up about a virus from a mod loaded up over at social.bioware?

Not a problem at all. I'm glad that you found the information beneficial

ZDF is Zev Dialogue Fix and CRS is Combined Romance Scenes, I wouldn't worry too much as CRS is a work in progress so is changing quite a lot. Strange I have moment like that but they are CRAFT moments, which sounds so much nicer than senior moments

The Firefox problem was when you download files it sets up it's own file association list which is strange because it hadn't asked me what programs I wanted to associate files to. When I tried to download DAMM it wouldn't download and I got this weird message about editing preferences. When I finally found them you can't edit them, so I called in Google and most people seemed to agree that you couldn't edit them ???? luckily I found a site way down the list, where someone explain the list isn't actually preferences and gave instructions how to fix the problem. When I saw the list it needed quite a bit of editing as it had files associated with programs I don't normally use and explains why I had so many problems downloading from some sites, especially a large site I help moderate. I use IE I to view files on this site before shunting them around, but when I started using FF it wouldn't let me do that so I had download dozens of files for checking and then had to delete them all. One good thing that has come out of it is I have now got the list sorted and everything is working well for downloading and viewing and I know more about FF.

What addled my brains was, it's horrible when you are working on one problem and right in the middle you get another problem you have to fix, by the time you get back to the first problem you are having a CRAFT (can't remember a flippin thing) moment

The virus message could have come from my email as it is always running, but it flashed up and away before I could read it, all I remember were the words virus and vault, so that was a third problem thrown into the mix

Ugh. Both of those are dialog and cutscene mods. UNfortunately in a case like that you cant really compare them, without having a builder to builder version. OR the actual files that the author saved, before exporting.

My guess would be, that they both have cuts and cubs and/or dlg files, which are the same filename or reference the same dialogs. My recommendation would be to ask both authors to collaborate together to put together a compatibility fix. So that htey could compile the conflicting files into one.

Craft moments. hahaha thats a nice way of putting it.

Ohhhhhh I see. Its a very rare occassion that I ever use FireFox, so I'm afraid that I dont really know the ins and outs of it, as I do with IE. But that sounds like an invasive pain in the rump. I mean, I have a lot of programs that I have set to run such and such files automatically, and I wouldnt want something coming in and changing that on me. It sounds almost like it does that by default. So it probably requires choosing the "advanced" install options, to set those manually.

You can't edit them!?!? Geeze.... thats... not right. How the heck can they release a browser that doesnt allow you to edit the settings for things that you are downloading??? (I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm pitching a fit at FireFox!).

Well, I'm glad to hear that it was something that you managed to get sorted out. Even tho it's something that you shouldnt have had to! And a learning experience is always a good thing. In the regards that it helps you to sort it out if it comes up again, or you see somebody else with the same problem.

Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Thats one reason that I have so many problems trying to figure out some of the tutorials for some of the functions of the toolset. They're all listed in seperate tutorials, so its a lot of jumping back and forth. By the time that I locate what I need in the third or so link... I've totally lost it (mentally) for what I originally needed!

Well...it if it really was a virus, hopefully the AV did its job proper, and got rid of it. Even if it didnt give ya a chance to even see what it was! There should be a configuration option for that...

Hrm. well, when asking around about these two mods, I was told that there's a compatibility patch for the two. I however, could not find it.

I did however, find this in the description of the Zev mod.

cmessaz's Romance Scenes Combined, while still a work in progress, is now in open beta and adds some incredible moments for wardens in a romance with Alistair. To use her mod with ZDF, delete alistair_main.dlg and alistair_main.dlb from the "Alistair" folder in ZDF and extract her files into the override directory. If you want to use her slideshow changes as well, you also will need to delete Slideshow_Fix from the ZDF directory.

from http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=928 (the zev mod). So that would be the files which arent playing nice with each other.

Hope that this helps you out Ell

Thanks they are working at the moment, but not through DAMM I manually installed them after removing the duplicate files mentioned.

It's the mod manager that is bugging me flagging a conflict when there shouldn't be one, that's why I asked the question here so I could actually look for myself if it was possible. As I said I did use the duplicate desktop folder method with the windows search option and I couldn't see any duplicate files, it's all a bit strange but will probably come out in the wash as they say
