Making a Modification-Based-Weapon and need some help with scripting?

So I was inspired by the COD ghosts "Maverick" assault rifle/sniper rifle and was planning on making a weapon in NV that could be modified with custom mods to change form into the other variant, per say, you attach the sniper modification parts and it will change to the sniper variant (will make both in the geck) and the other way around, starting with a basic weapon body that does ~ok~ damage and such, a small scale weapon, but when the assault rifle mod or the sniper mod are attached to the weapon it changes to the other form, is this possible? I know the weapon mod kits mod from fallout 3 runs in a similar way, when chosen to add a silencer or whatever you choose, you are given the weapon with the corresponding attachment through scripting (since weapon modifications were not around in FO3).

 

So my simply placed question, if I wanted to be "player.equipitem" 'd or a script runs to give the player a specific weapon when the player attaches a certain weapon modification to the weapon they already have, how could I do it?
