Why does this happen

Most likely Office is in there because it has a routine in it that checks for something. I'm not sure if its a registration check, or a security check, or what exactly it is. Turning it off should be ok though.

Hahaha yeah, I know what you mean. Back in the old days, I could tell exactly waht things were in both msconfig AND task manager. Nowadays... geeze... MS has gone so nuts with svchosts that there's NO TELLING what something is! (basterds! )

hehe happy hunting!

I hope that that helps to clear up some of hte trouble tho.

And how long has it been since you've done a spyware scan? With something like spybot s&d, adaware, or malwarebytes?

 funny you should ask that, you know what I'm like about backing up files, well I'm the same about other things, like spyware, defragging etc it all gets done once a day, virus checkers are updated a couple of times a day because of the time difference between here and the US which seems to be where the updates come from. I also only have 3 icons on my desktop, it seems silly to have nice wallpaper and cover it in icons, I did at one point have no icons at all, but I couldn't get used to not having My Documents and the recycle bin there so I had to put them back, I also run CCleaner once a day.

I think part of the problem is people seem to want one click fixes and the PC to do everything for them, which is fine if that is what you want, to me it feels like the PC has taken control and I'm just along for the ride, like 'you will do it this way' yeah right, not if I can help it.

I also hate graphic programs like Picasa and PSP that create all those files because you use the thumbnail browser, or because they just do, there are hundreds of the things.

Right back the unexpected visitors have left, so it's back to what I was doing.

Well, that was an interesting experience. I can't believe how many things I've disable or deleted, what about all that iTunes and Adobe junk along with the things it puts in there, see !! they should give you the chance to choose when they install.

I will be adding this to my list of things to keep unclogged from now on. I assumed if it didn't show in the start up menu or the system tray there wasn't anything running and it certainly explains why I've seem the processor usage shoot up for no apparent reason. My desktop loads like grease lightning now  I'm in your debt again thank you.

I'm going to check it again tomorrow and make sure nothing has sneaked back while I've not been looking

Wow! Once a DAY?? LOL I cant even imagine how much time that must take. Tho granted, with the regular intervalled defrags, that part of it wouldnt take very long.

I'll say this tho.... I wouldnt wanna be your hdd! With that much intensive work that you put on it every day, you're a slavedriver! hahaha

Yeah, theres a lot of stuff that really builds up in the boot menu after time. Some of it Will creep back in. I know from a friend's system that the stuff installed with Itunes will come back.

Some of them do give the option of what to install, if you choose the custom install option, but a lot don't. Or a lot of the optional stuff, really ISNT optional for the software to run correctly.

Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of stuff runs completely in the background. So some of it might not show up in the tray or manager. Which is annoying, it's like... dammit, I may need to end you, stop being so sneaky! There are 3rd party managers that can see them running, and some of them are freeware. Its just been a really long time since I checked into any of them that I dunno which ones are good anymore.

Hahaha yeah, it can be surprising how much time that stuff takes to load up at boot, and how big a difference it can make in the boot time. I'm getting to where I REALLY miss the load time of JUST windows, with nothing else installed! Even if it doesnt affect the game performance, its definitely a BIG plus for personal use. So its a benefit all the way around.

Tho hopefully yeah, it does help with the problems that you're having in the game.

Enjoy!

My daily cleanup doesn't take much time, because I spend so much time on the PC it's always on during the day and evening, my email scanner and firewall things update at startup and I do a quick click about dinner time to check for updates which there usually are, so while I cook and eat things get done.

The defrag is different I run a freebie called smart defrag which will check when the PC is idle, so I don't actually do a huge defrag anymore. If I've been removing programs, deleting files I will get it to check and then run defrag if it needs it which isn't often. Other programs only update when I use them and I run CCleaner when I first switch on. I've got 3 HDs 2 are stripped (is that the right word) so it writes/works faster or something like that. I know what I mean and the 3rd drive is used for back up, with external HD as a second back up, just in case all else fails.

I read that the iTunes thing will put them back in startup eventually, unless I remove the program I'm not sure about that one yet time will tell.
