Boomersoonr
Hey guys. Tonight after installing a couple mods (Mighty Magic, Modular Midas) I began getting a crash when loading the game up initially. I get to the opening Bethesda video, but then on the loading screen, it never progresses at all and there are no sounds. I have to ctrl + alt + del to get out of it. I play the steam version of the game. I have already tried disabling all the mods I recently installed, not working. I'm close to reinstalling, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious first. Here is my BOSS.txt with my load order and notes. http://paste-it.net/public/d8068c2/ note: I already read through the boss notes and disabled the mods it told me to based on what else I was running. I had this problem just the other day. Everything I researched didnt work. Try dowloading streamline 2.1 esp and use that one instead. Also are you running obse? If you are make sure your src folder is in the oblivion folder not the data folder.
yeldarb
Remember if you are using Windows Vista or 7 to install Oblivion outside of Program Files and UAC monitoring. I install Oblivion in C:Games\Oblivion instead of C:Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion to avoid UAC interferring with my playing and still having the protection UAC provides while online.Just remember that the Steam version still needs all the paths after C:Program Files\...\....\ to run correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't choose where to install the game through steam. Durbin, I tried streamline 2.1, no luck. I also run OBSE and it's installed properly. Looks like I have to start fresh with a reinstall.
yeldarb
Boomersoonr-I went to the Steam website and looked through the troubleshooting and am waiting on a replies to a messages, but from what I have read You definitely need to run as an Administator to play the Steam version with UAC, you are going to have problems with the Steam version and mods that do require OBSE because of how OBSE works to change Oblivion. If you want to avoid this then you should buy a disc and use the existing Oblivion and Data Files for your Steam version of Oblivion, but you may want to move it someplace safe when you do use the disc version, try hiding it in your saved games. I have UAC turned off, and I'm pretty sure it's not OBSE causing the problem, as I've been running that for a week or so with no problems. I'm just going to reinstall tonight and add mods slowly to try and figure it out. EDIT: Also, I own a disc copy of oblivion. Unfortunately I lost the disc a while back. Still have the box and manuals and what not, just no install disc =/.
bben46
You not only must have OBSE installed (Special instructions for steam are included with the OBSE) but you must start the game with OBSE and not the Oblivion Launcher. BTW, steam does not allow where you install the game - it must be in the steam folder. However, you can put the steam folder outside of the UAC protected program files folders. Mine is in C:\Games\Steam. I do not recommend turning UAC off as that is like leaving a back door unlocked for virus and other malware. Don't make it easy for them. Tomlong54210
You can just turn UAC off on the Steam folder, alone. Also, just because the game was working fine with OBSE installed does not guarantee that it is working (at least, I do not think that that is the case with Steam since Steam users do not launch OBSE through the obse_loader.exe) Have you turned on the 'Steam community in-game' option? (See the note under "Install OBSE".)
