Game freezes

Hello.

Fallout 3 always freezes after a few minutes of playing. I searched the web for solutions for quite a while, but nothing so far helped (i.e. compatibility mode, k-lite codecs, deactivating v-sync, that one dll file I downloaded here).

I use Windows 7 64x and my CPU has 2 cores.

The latest patch is installed.

I don't use any mods. What is dual core fix? When I google for it I don't find anything.

I limited my CPU to 1 core over Msconfig and it seems to work. But I always have to reboot after changing that setting, so I would prefer an actual solution. (And since it worked with one core, I suppose that dual core fix could work - whatever it might be.)

That dual core fix reapair crash when loading interiors:

- Open the folder My documents / My Games / Fallout3

- Edit the file FALLOUT.ini.

- Inside FALLOUT.ini look for a group called [general].

- Inside the general group, after all the configuration parameters, just copy and paste the following 2 lines:

bUseThreadedAI=1

iNumHWThreads=2

Now close and save the Fallout 3 configuration file.

Also i found few solutions for Windows 7 here they are:

-Remove Alchemy,

-If you are running Windows 7 try install the older audio drivers from xp, this is in Windows seven pro,

-Install them using the the XP compatibility mode it should work, the xp drivers don't use alchemy.

(This is for people using Creative cards)

it might work for you.

Note Windows 7 will run just fine without it. No noticeable change.

-I found that also will stop that nasty crash to desktop when launching the game in Windows 7, try using the basic taskbar lay out. the old vista one. That also works.

It doesn't like many of the Windows 7 features for some reason, even Vista's.

Oh that dual core fix - I thought you were talking about a patch. I didn't try it at first, because I thought it would limit a quadcore CPU to a dualcore CPU and I already have a dualcore CPU... But it seems to work, so thanks. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I was having constant freezes. I have about 30 mods and FOMM. One of them is 20th Century weapons which has been kind of weird for me. The weapons would appear white on screen and the image in the pip boy it would show as file not found. I also deleted a bunch of other mods because of the freezes.

My system specs are in my signature.

I used the RAM fix to make use of my 8 gigs. Then I changed the fallout.ini to as you said:

bUseThreadedAI=1

iNumHWThreads=4

Now, my game doesn't crash at all. :thumbsup:

There are still micro-stutters, but they work themselves out. The weirdest thing is that it fixed my 20th Century Weapons problem! The meshes all work and the pip boy images are all there!!

I was at the point where I only played once a week, because of the freezes and annoyances, now I play a lot more. I can finally bring back the Mutant Mod

Thanks.

There is also a fix for that stutering, that you could try:

Open Fallout3.ini then find iFPSclamp=0 and change it to iFPSclamp=60, should remove those sttuters.

And if you have older version of CCC update(Catalyst Control Center and drivers).

Actually that made it a lot worse so I changed it back.
