Request: Improved Asala

Greetings,

I've been trying without luck to find a talented modder to revamp Sten's sword Asala to something other than the crap it is now. I'm not familiar with how to use the Toolset or I would have done it myself. The reason I want this done is lore-wise it makes no sense that the Arishok would send Sten on such an important and dangerous mission to gather information about the Darkspawn horde and give him such a hunk of junk to defend himself with. It's no wonder he got his ass handed to him the first time he got jumped by a couple of genlock midgets. Now sure I could just give him a different weapon to use (Starfang comes to mind) but when I play such a well-developed RPG I really get into the story of the game and Sten's character would never use a blade other than the one he was given by his Arishok (it's like a physical representation of his soul which is why he slaughtered that family when he first lost it)

I'm not interested in having the sword's look altered, the style and color of the sword are great, it's just that the quality and stats of Asala are woefully inadequate.

So to reiterate, I only want to have the stats altered (the flavor text should stay the same, as should the order the stats are listed on the blade. It should be easy enough to just increase the values without re-arranging anything since the type of stats aren't changing) What I want done is to have either a mod file that goes into the override folder or a dazip file (whichever is easiest for whomever is willing to take on this project) that overwrites the current version so when you give Sten the gift version of Asala and you automatically get Asala in your inventory, you get the upgraded version.

I've given some thought to the changes that should be made and I've come up with reasonable increases that make it a quality weapon but not overpowered. I want the sword upgraded to:

Dragonbone (Tier 7)

Base Damage: 17.60

Armor Penetration: 6.00

Critical Chance: 2.40%

Range: Melee

Strength Requirement: 38 Strength

Rune Slots: 3

And for the stats, upgrade them to:

+3 Willpower

+2.5 Armor Penetration

+14 Attack

I want to say thank you in advance to those that are considering doing this, because I tried to figure out how and was at a loss. I've got no problem tinkering with the innards of the computer but software modification is not my strong suite.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Best Regards,

David

you don't need to change the overide file all you need is winter forge by the great pheanan to change stats and attributes and much much more...

http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=122

http://social.bioware.com/project/672/

this mod winter forge is a stand alone mod that let's you edit you're game weapon (any in-game weapon/armors or mod weapons/armors created)stats/attributes/special abilities like slow/stun ect.this basically let's you modify you're equipments it is up to you whether you make you gear's over powered, under powered or balance how ever you like with out using the tool set.

it also allows you to change the material grade of the weapon(from iron -dragpnbone to starmetal and on the new version volcanic grade material) and it's special effect's (blue flame/frost/redflame)and let's you craft new gears, winter forge currently has two version the old version v0.4.0rc2 - Sources.dazip which you can find in bioware forum and the new updated version v0.5.0rc1 now for a detailed guide on how to use this great mod and forging recipes visit this website. created by pheanan http://dragonage.phaenan.net/formulae_prptable.html

SN: forged materials like gold enamels will be changed to iron and crafted materials with you're name on the gear will not be imported when importing to expansion when using the older version of this mod but forged/edited/altered gears on winter forge can be imported.

While I appreciate this suggestion, I'd prefer to have Asala edited rather than adding a game altering program to the mix. I want to keep things as basic as possible and not add to much extra to the game. Just personal preference. (I realize this may limit my chances of getting this done but I'm just not comfortable adding extra software to the game) Thank you for the response though, I'll just have to hope that a toolset savvy modder is bored and willing to do it.

I actually second Spets' recommendation for the use of Winter Forge. I use it a lot, and absolutely love it.

Asala wouldnt be very hard to mod. But I want to point something out. I'm not sure what the stats for this would be on dragonbone, since I'm at school and cant check them on this computer.

Dragonbone (Tier 7)

Base Damage: 17.60

Armor Penetration: 6.00

Critical Chance: 2.40%

Range: Melee

Strength Requirement: 38 Strength

Rune Slots: 3

These right here are pre-assigned either by the weapon itself, or by the material used to make it. And they can't be changed in the toolset. So for instance, if the weapon/mat combo for a weapon's AP would be say.... 3.25 that figure cant be changed in the toolset. A person would have to add armor piercing property to it to compensate and get it up to around 6.0

Those are just the standard stats for a Dragonbone greatsword, I got them off of the Dragon Age wiki. I don't know how it works with the toolset so I figured I would try and give as much info as possible to make it easier to do.

Ah, I see. K. yeah, like I said, I was at school before, and couldnt really check it out.

This is..... really odd. I've tried three times now and every time, it reverts back. Either I'm missing something here, or this thing is just wierd. Has anybody else tried editing the gen_im_gift_sword_sten.uti and end up having it revert back?

Where do you even find the weapon files? I tried doing a windows search for files with the uti extension and it came up with nothing.

I noticed the file name you referenced says gift in it, is it possible that's the file for the gift item that you give Sten to get the actual sword? I'm just guessing because I really am in the dark on this stuff. Although, if your changing stats then it probably is the sword in which case I have no clue since I can't even find the file in the first place lol.

The Winter Forge isn't a "game altering program", it's an add-on just like any other and it blends nicely with the core game -- there's an NPC at your camp which changes the items for you in a manner you request, and who can be totally ignored if you don't need her services.

edit: DarkeWolf, the sword of the Sten is actually defined in gen_im_wep_mel_gsw_stn.uti

When I say game altering I'm refering to gameplay, not the actual software. It's the same reason I don't use any of the add-ons that add (add-ons that add...redundant I know) houses or extra character slots or scenarios or as a general rule, items. (I made an exception for the Armor of the Sten mod and Leliana's Sacred Ashes gear) I try to keep it as close to the original as possible and only stick with mods that fix dialogue bugs, improve textures, or in the case of what I want with Asala adjust a pre-existing item so that it makes more sense when following the story.

That being said, thank you for replying with the info about which file the sword is, that was very helpful and hopefully with that new information DarkeWolf will be able to make the changes.

Ah, the way it was worded it seemed you're concerned about using external program which may possibly change the game experience. Even so, imo one NPC in far off and easily ignored corner of the camp, one who doesn't interact with you outside of single dialogue doesn't exactly change how the game events unfold. Of course, your mileage may vary.

You might still want to consider going this route for one reason, though -- if you have already received the item in question i.e. Sten is now carrying his sword around, then altering the base item isn't going to affect your game (the properties of items are generally stored in the savegame) and the sword in your possesion is likely to remain unchanged. With the Winter Forge becoming the one remaining way to alter it the way you wish.
