Life

Life is too mysterious for everyone to go and waste it solely on fun.

In my opinion, to enjoy life to its fullest is to learn more about it through exploration and experimentation. In our short time on this planet we have discovered countless wonders the likes of which no species as ever come close to understanding. For example, we recently discovered another planet twice the size of our own within a habitable distance of its sun (estimated at about 70 degrees) and just a few hundred years after we realized the earth is round.

I loathe the thought of what we would be like if the pursuit of excellence wasn’t a part of our culture.

Perfection can never happen. There will always be someone who is a little less perfect than you are and just imperfect enough to not fit into your view of the world. Differences should be embraced, encouraged, and celebrated because when you really look at the big picture, those differences are what keeps everything in flux and the wheels of evolution going.

As for the other part, it's not about fun vs. work. It's Diligence and Charity (not the groups you give money to, but the notion of helping others get a leg up from time to time) vs. Sloth and Greed.

People can still have fun while leading productive and enriching lives. People can strive to bring up their entire environment and live each moment with such vitality knowing that they're making things better for someone. Or, people can only think of bettering themselves, taking everything they can get and giving nothing back. Or people can their entire life, just a cog in the machine, doing work not because it's good, but just because it's easy and grants them a comfortable life. But not all stars shine with the same brightness and someone HAS to do all that support work behind the scenes in order to allow one of those really bright ones the ability to move out between the rest and hopefully pull everyone else up with them. Even the best actors need someone there to setup the stage, check the sound and lighting, make all the equipment, prepare the food and give them some direction. Again, that reliance on those minor differences in order to forge ahead one step at a time.

I'll second that.
