Clexor
Ok, so like the topic says when ever I start Oblivion it insta-crashes, I get about half-way through the Bethesda logo and it suddenly "stops working". Below are some facts about my installation. I have no mods installed. It is installed to my external hard-drive.I have un-installed and re-installed in multiple locations and the same thing happens.I have the first disc of the GOTY edition installed. (I tried it with the second disc and it still crashed I figured that might be the problem and was wrong.)I have played oblivion on this computer before and it ran perfectly fine.I can't be sure but it seems as if some files may be missing from the base directory.I tried the start with and without the 1.2 patch and it crashes either way. Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated.
Tomlong54210
Did you regenerate the Oblivion.ini http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=know_how_to#RegenerateTheOblivion.ini?
Clexor
I hadn't even thought that was necessary/possible. Thanks man, your getting kudos for that, I would never have figured that out on my own.

Thanks man, your getting kudos for that, I would never have figured that out on my own. When the game is installed it creates a second "Oblivion" folder in Documents\My Games. That is where your Saves folder and various configuration files are created. None of the files in that folder are removed when the game is uninstalled. When you update your hardware or reinstall the game, it may be necessary to refresh that INI file and sometimes the other hardware-related INI files in there as well. The setup is quirky, but it usually does not spontaneously destroy itself.
