happytreefri3nds
I'm new to Fallout - I'm in love with Fallout 3, can't wait for New Vegas, and - best of all - JB HI-FI is selling a pack of Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics for just AU$20!!! Anyway, I don't know the FULL plot. Did the apocalypse only occur in the US? Becuase I haven't heard about any Vaults Vault-Tec built OUTSIDE of the US. Then again, I don't hear about people evacuating the US.
Nihilisaurus
As far as we know everyone everywhere got hit. Well, actually the intros say that the world was engulfed in a sea of nuclear fire (or something dramatic to that effect). It's never made clear but it's assumed so. falloutperson416
I would guess that everything is gone. My assumtion is the same as Lt Albrecht.

happytreefri3nds
So why didn't Vault-Tec build Vaults outside the U.S.? I mean, I know they were for social experimenting, but wouldn't people have gotten suspicious?
bben46
Vault-Tec was a US based corporation. It's possible there were similar corporations in other countries building vaults or something similar - actually in the 1950s we called them bomb shelters. In Russia, the entire Moscow subway system was designed as a large bomb shelter (vault). The Swiss built large bomb shelters in or near some of their cities. The British government modified their old WWII tunnels as more up to date bomb shelters. The US government built a vault for the congress under the Greenbrier Hotel Resort - see it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greenbrier scroll down to find 'The Bunker' What would they be suspicious of that they were not already suspicious about? Every country was suspicious of everything done in another country during the cold war ( I lived through it so I speak with first hand knowledge.) Vault-Tec is a private company, not a government project and it's activities were not a secret - they advertised on large billboards.
signalp
Although this could sound strange for lots of people, considering the political neutrality position that Swiss is known by, but still today every architecture project for residential buildings must have an area (normally in the lower levels beneath the building itself) for nuclear sheltering. The shelters must have capacity just for the building residents to stay a few weeks (don't know exactly how much) in order to avoid the firsts major exposures, rains, and so one after the blasts. I saw some last year, already in the final building construction stage in the city of Lausanne, and one of the things that impressed me the most were the entrance door thickness, who resembled a fortified bank vault door. They also increment the foundations building stability (they require many reinforced structures) which could also be crucial to all the above to stand against an earthquake. I don't know if this is also a common procedure in other European countries, but I had no idea that some of them as it seems, were still so concerned about such threats to the point of building not only some shelters around the major areas, but in a so massive way. Now going back to the topic, I am afraid that the answer is obvious. With all the nuclear power in existence in China and in the US, it would be enough to destroy everything if the two countries start throwing warheads each other. The entire globe would be destroyed, if not by direct hits, it would in the following months when the radiation start to poison everything everywhere blown by the wind. As an example, we only need to see all the fuss created for just a volcano erupting in Island, now imagine that if instead of ashes, you had radioactive particles and radioactive ashes spreading all around! falloutperson416
Well... Actually... What about Las Vegas??? Vegas was not hit directly by the nukes. Sin city is evidance.
bben46
The Swiss are one of the few countries who take war seriously - really seriously. That's why they are neutral. And why they have one of the best trained and best equipped army on earth.
falloutperson416
Is that right? Thats interesting. So, do you know who bombed each other first? Meaning, the Chines or US?
