Crash on Launch

I've seen dozens... heck maybe hundreds... of topics on what do do about crashes during launch and after launch, usually involving dlls and load orders, and plugins and addons... and I've duly tried every one of them at one time or another. Some work after a fashion, most don't but nearly all of them have been described as the "ultimate" answer to CTD problems. Right now, I think I'd be happy with a CTD or two after the game started and was running.

What I'm NOT finding is a solution to a problem that popped up and bit me a few days ago after a fresh reinstall from Steam. I click Fallout.exe and it pops up that first "Please Stand By" slide, plays about 3 notes of the intro theme and crashes. Says Fallout 3 has stopped working yadayada and I have to start task manager to even get my cursor back so I can close the program. AppCRash says the fault occurred with FO3.exe and I've deleted and redownloaded it twice in addition to doing two total reinstalls this morning. Using stock INI files and other than the DLCs there are no mods to cause a load order problem.

No matter how I word my search, it ALWAYS winds up talking about all the old standbys for post launch CTDs. I've been through about six pages of comments on this forum so far (Intend to read some more) but they invariably wind up chasing the D3D9 and the graphics card and the load order rabbits but I'm running exactly the same setup I've run the game with for motnths now with no problem up until the reinstall. Can anyone think of anything I should be looking at here? Thanks.

As a matter of fact I do,If you have the time, I got the dime.

I need to know what space is available ,where your game is located, how huch data is there.

I need to know IF you know how to create a new profile on your system?

My instrauctions follwed to the letter will get the game up an running for you but, you can not transfer other data from this current profile to that one, DO NOT do it.

your suffering from a permission issue. it's a very good hunch based soley on your discription cuz I have been there.

networking snafue has tied the knots so tight, where the bug is....is too much work to find it.

20 minutes and your up and running...Default vanilla fallout3. after that, your on your own.

EDIT: Read all of this and try it, Keep steam out of the picture please, be smart.

If you did not delete your previous Data folder you might have remnants of previous mods that you manually installed. A missing XML include will cause a crash just like that. If you have a Menus folder in your Data folder, rename it or delete it.

I did all the normal stuff, believe me. I spend a lot of time on these forums and I take note of anything and everything that might impact my gameplay.

The problem is fixed by the way in a way that I would never have thought of and that I'll bet not many people would. Thanks to BenWah of uploader of the UUF3P mod who posted a definintive guide on getting FO3 up and running for the Steam Community. He included an experimental fix for just the problem I was having in his guide with the disclaimer that there was no hard evidence that it would help.

Since I was, by this time, thinking it wouldn't hurt either since all it meant was another purge and reinstall, I tried it and my game loaded and has been working perfectly ever since. All I did was copy the contents of my Fallout Default.ini to my Fallout.ini. Scoff if you will. :D I have no idea why it worked or how or why I kept getting a screwed up ini file in the download if that's what was happening, but whatever the case, that simple little operation fixed the problem. Since then I've reinstalled all my mods and utilities and redone all my ini tweaks and everything is still working perfectly althugh I've still got my fingers crossed. When I deleted previous content each time, I deleted it all, including the ini files and started out with a totally clean and fresh install each time.

I thank those that responded here although this was intended as more of a vent post than anything else since I had read through hundreds of posts on dozens of forums and even when I could sepearate the pregame crash posts from the ingame crash posts, there were never any actual answers.
