huxleykrcc
I'm running Oblivion on a laptop installed with Windows 7. I've been messing around with mods (I've been an Oblivion fan for ages, but never tried mods). It seemed like the "Oblivion mod manager" was necessary, so I downloaded and installed it. It says, however, that I am a "limited user," which prevents me from accessing most of its functions. I checked, and my account (the only one) is considered the administrator account. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm a bit baffled, to be honest. I know I could simply reinstall the game in [user]/games, but I'd rather not, since the problem will probably come up again. I apologize if this is a painfully obvious question. I'm not very computer savvy; I know the difference between a file extension and an ethernet cord, but a lot of this is a bit confusing--not entirely indecipherable, but new. I'd appreciate any help/.\

huxleykrcc
Thanks much--it did. And thanks for not calling me a moron. I'm always a little wary of these forums; people often just want to prove how much smarter they are than you. Thanks again.
jason04srt4
I'm having same problem. I tried to Run as Adminisrator, but then it says that "Vista appears to have moved some of oblivion files to the virtual store. Do you wish to move them back? If you don't know what the virtual store is, please read entry 16 in the FAQ." I'm running windows 7 not vista. When I first downloaded OBMM a screen came up telling me that I was a limited user, and suggested I install the game in C:\Games\oblivion. Should I uninstall from current location and reinstall there? I'm a 360 player for about 4 years, but just got it for my laptop and I'm not great with computers, so forgive me if I'm really slow/dumb when it comes to all this stuff. Thanks for any help
bben46
By uninstalling and reinstalling to C:\Games\Oblivion, you will avoid all of the hassles that come with trying to work around the Win7 (and Vista) UAC protection that is automatically applied to every program installed in the 'program files' folders - where almost all programs seem to think they should be installed. When you reinstall, it will ask where you want to install, and automatically select C:\Program files x86\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion. Do not accept that. change it to C:\Games\Oblivion In the original install, the \Bethesda Softworks folder is a holding folder just for Beth games such as Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. In the new location, the \Games folder serves the same purpose, but can be used as a place to put any game, even those not made by Bethesda. - so Oblivion is installed to C:\Games\Oblivion, Fallout 3 to C:\Games\Fallout 3. That way all of your games are easy to find as they are all in the same place, but each is in it's own folder. Note that if you use Steam for downloading your games it will be slightly different. In that case, you will need to install the Steam folder outside of the program folders. Mine is C:\Games\Steam. Then steam will install the games you download in the steam folder there where they are not affected by UAC.

jason04srt4
Thanks Fellas! bben46, I've seen some of your posts in the Frequently Asked Question Thread, so expect a few questions from me. Don't worry I won't bug you unless I just can't figure something out, I plan to only get small mods(weapons) to begin with. I probably need to use your test mod just to practice with for a while. One more thing, Do I need to uninstall the construction set also?

One more thing, Do I need to uninstall the construction set also?Yes. TESCS needs to be installed in the OB archive. It will not work until you reinstall it.
