Can't open data folder

Recommended Posts

The data folder is an integral part of the game. If the data folder cannot be opened, you can not play the game even without mods. It is also not an archive.

Not much info to work with here

What mod?

What Operating System?

Where is your game installed?

What is your unzipping program?

How are you going about trying to install mods?

First guess, you are trying to put a zipped mod directly into the data folder. Won't work. It must be unzipped first.

Second guess, you are using either Vista or Win7 and installed to the default location - you are being blocked by UAC - reinstall outside of the UAC protected folders - in a new folder such as C:\Games\Fallout3

You can also completely disable UAC in your Control Panel. Search UAC in the search bar an disable it completely.

If you are dowloading a file from the Nexus, download it to a seperate mod folder, not directly to you Fallout > Data.

I am using Windows 7. What I have siad above is exactly what I have done, and I mod, download mods and enjoy the Fallout world.

Try this technique, and see if it works.

Good luck!

I do not recommend disabling UAC as that leaves a back door open for malware. The purpose of UAC is to prevent malware from Making changes to programs in the protected folders. The first change they make if they do get in is to disable your antivirus so you don't know you have been infected. By installing games outside of the UAC protected folders and leaving the UAC on you do not leave the door unlocked.
