Porters and Pack creatures

Hi folks, I've been checking around for a while and I can't find any decent pack creatures or porter mods for Oblivion... I had a Pack Guar once upon a time but I can't even find anything like that!

If I had my way then I would be demainding rincewinds luggage but I don't know how fussy the system is such as redirecting the animation etc for a follower to the Nif for a chest making a kind of floating bobbing trunk that follows you round, or anything more complicated from there...

I'd be happy enough with a depressed looking midget that I could kick from time to time but he'd have to really look miserable about his lot, I'm not having some happy slave HELL NO!

Obviously I have a saddlebag and horse summon mod so this is a nice to have kind of thing but I'm surprised no-one has done this! I'd like to have a go myself so if anyone knows of anyone who has tried and failed please give me a heads up!

Mainly it's due to the scripting involved with trying to get a creature to hand all that sort of behavior and planning for eventualities related to said creature being killed, thrown off cliffs, locked away in a dark room, left in a distant plane, ect. Then there's that little tiny bit related to making new add-on pieces that look like baggage for that creature, if not having to make a new creature from scratch.

If I had any experience rigging to creatures/modelling, I might take this up, but sadly, no. In Iliana's Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina there are merchants who have Pack Elephants with chests on them-With a little scripting, it could be done that if you activated your elephant while sneaking or anything else, for that matter, you would access the inventory of your pack.

As for a depressed looking midget that you can kick around, I can see how that can be done http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/wink.gif

If you are looking for a way to carry around more stuff, you might also be interested in the Arcane Chest spell that comes with LAME. Cast it and sacrifice a perfect diamond to get access to an extra-dimensional chest to put stuff into. Or, sacrifice a pearl to take everything out. Or, sacrifice 2500 gold to create three perfect diamonds.

Awesome folks. Thanks for all the responses! I'm just looking at the Pack Guar mod, I can't believe I missed it :wallbash:

I had a look today at starting to mash together a walking chest in Nifscope... And then I stopped again, I recon I'd have to model my own chest and then rig it to get the thing to work, the .NIF for an animal is a long way from that of a chest. I'd need to modify the mesh of a critter like a Baliwog (unless anyone knows of a critter that runs about on 50 tiny chubby legs?) until it was a mass of smaller legs nah I'm lost.

I can however make midget Pack Guars! YAY.

You know...

There actually is such a thing as a chest animal. Seriously. They're called Mimics. I'll get the link in a second. Edit: Mimics

Mimics is a cool mod that has treasure chests that come to life and attack you. I don't know how exactly it's done -- animation-wise, graphics-wise, whatever. I do know that the chests look exactly like a normal chest until you try to open it, then the thing jumps at you and sprouts legs that it runs around on. It looks like a... well, it looks like a chest with legs on it.

Might be a place to start, if that's what you're looking for. You'd have to ask the creator for permission to use his\her models and textures if you wanted to release your mod, though.

Edit: Yup, just what I remembered. There's a screenshot of the chest creature in the link. It's a chest with four spidery legs and a row of teeth. It runs around much like a spider and is damn hard to kill. What's really hilarious is when you install this mod along with a bunch of others and then completely forget about it... until you're down on the fifth floor of Bleak Dungeon #54 and go to open a newfound nifty chest of l33t loot only to have the thing grow teeth and jump at you out of nowhere. Scared the living (bleeep) out of me the first time. Okay, and the second time... and the third...

Edit some more: Nice. It looks like there's a quest attached to the Mimics mod, and if you complete it, your reward is your own pet mimic. It seems to be exactly what you're looking for -- a chest on legs that follows you around and holds your loot. Okay, so I think you originally wanted a floating chest like the Rincewind luggage, but this is pretty damn close!

Edit one more time: Would help if I actually read the whole description before commenting. The author gives blanket permission for the mimics resources to be used freely in other mods. No need to ask, just credit him. He's even packaged the resource files as a separate download for anyone who wants the resources but not the actual mod. I love people sometimes, it really gives me back some faith in humanity.
