ZendeavoRedux
I just installed this game freshly, and decided to throw some extra mods on it to enliven the play experience a bit. But I seem to have a problem now. I can't choose a character background so I can't even start a new game! Has anyone else run into this issue before? Is there a fix? I can give a list of installed mods if necessary
ZendeavoRedux
And FYI I'm also updated to 1.04 patch already as well, but it doesn't seem to help anything either. I've been tinkering with these mods for like 6 hours now trying to fix this problem. Would have been simpler to just re-install -_-

RustyBlade
Have you tried disabling your mods before starting? Have you been using the toolset? Can you get to the screen that allows you to select human/dwarf/elf etc?
ZendeavoRedux
I forgot to mention I also threw on some overrides to prettify the game. DA: Redesigned and Natural Bodies AIO, more hairstyles(which I'm pretty sure didn't work, because I don't think I see any new styles) And yes, I can select my Gender, Race, and Archetype, but the Background section only has one empty grey box, which I cannot select. If it helps, I do have an extra unlabeled archetype aside from Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and when I play on Leliana's Song or Awakenings there are several unlabeled specializations and Focuses. I would think that if I got the specializations and focuses stuff installed right, it would include all the names and descriptions, but it's all just empty aside from the icons. I have been disabling mods one at a time, but when it didn't fix the problem, I enabled it again before moving on to the next, but I got really sick of the trial and error approach. Considering a reinstall, but first I made a backup with DAModder and am going to try restoring back to an older one to see if it helps any. RustyBlade
Try disabling Advanced Tactics v3.1, Character Respec v1.6, Paladin Specialization v1.3 and Weapon Focus + Specializations mods at the same time before you do anything drastic. They may conflict with one another. Then try disabling all your mods at once should that fail.
ZendeavoRedux
well DAModder just crashes when I try to load it up now so I'm more interested in resetting everything back to default. Is there any way to do that without losing my installed DLC? One thing I don't like trying to do is recover DLC...It's never been a particularly trustworthy process. I've looked in my folders and they're uhm...kind of a mess now. I can't open DAModder to restore back to default installation(which I had backed up with DLC) and it'd be a trip to try and delete all the excess files I have now =\
RustyBlade
You can disable the DLC mods in game without DA Modder or DAO-Modmanager. Just go to the downloaded content window, click the installed tab and uncheck the boxes. That mess you are referring to may prove to be a problem though. If you are unable to get things going by unchecking the DLC's in game, your best option is probably to do a complete uninstall and reinstall and by that I mean trash everything - mods, saves, all of it. You will then need to re-download your Official DLC's and unless you are like me and saved all the user-made content you DL'ed, you will need to re-download those as well. I also suggest you switch to DAO-Modmanager and use the game's content updater for installing dazips as DA Modder is still a beta. I won't go so far as to say it caused your problems but from the mess you have described it certainly has not helped.
ZendeavoRedux
Well I went with the full re-install and trashed everything. My game is back to vanilla mode. I started with DAO-MM but it seemed obtuse and complex, and every time I tried to give it an override it would tell me the file wasn't an override at all. That was strange, but a little tinkering managed to fix that issue so that I could get NBaio to work. I'm gonna re-download all my user-mods just for veracity's sake and start over again. My official DLC managed to download again without issue, so I've uncrossed my fingers and let out a sigh of relief about that. Thanks for the suggestions. The mess of folders and files got really intrusive and I just couldn't handle it anymore. Now I'd be curious to know what the most highly favored mods might be, in priority of the compatible ones. The database here is a bit unfriendly, if I do say so myself. Not entirely unnavigable but certainly lacking in list options.
