johnynumonic2004
So I read absolutly all the discussions...followed all the descriptions and did exactly as described.I decided to start out easy...was going to put the alice mod in or mybe the conrad radio one in. My specs-Win 7 Ultimate 64-bitquad core amd12 gig ramNvidia G-force GTX 260 x2 (not in sli at the moment)Duel 24-inch HD sony monitors in highest res settings. 1. I started with a fresh install of FO3 and installed it to c:\Fallout 3 as described in many posts.2. I made a folder in my docs named FO3 mods.3. I downloaded the FO3 patch 1.7 and installed it.4. I played the game until exit of vault and saved at the opening screen upon exit.( game worked fine)5. I then hit the nexus..picking mods...the mods I chose are:Alice package 4280CONELRADio_640-1240-6104RTS_New_Wave_-_fomod-7070 6. I then D-loadedfomm_0_11_9_640fo3e_12program version whatever thats called.activateinvalid thing. 7. I unpacked activeinvalid into my FO3 dir (c:\Fallout 3) then activated it.8. I ran the fomm...chose my mod in my mod folder from its list...activated with the activate button.9. started the game with the launch fallout button... and thats where everything sucks...lol.no matter if I activate the game from descktop or from tyhe launcher...the game startes...black screen...then I hear a pinch of audio and the crashes to descktop with a fgallout has stoppped working. If I dont use the fomm or the activateinvalide or anything and just drop mods in the data folder as directed in the forums how to install mods and follow all instruction in the mods themselves the game runs but no mods are there. So this is where I am stuck. I love this game and really want to run some mods...especially that wave mode for building your own settlement. Can someone please give a understandable step procc in which to install this stuff. I would be must humbled and gracious by your effort. THX in advance.
neomonkeus
If you are manually installed all the files to the data folder then mods just need to activated. This is done via the splash screen when you run from the disk or alternatively running either fallout.exe or the launcher which ever presents the default install/uninstall screen (one of them skips this splash screen, cant remember off-hand sorry). Under one of the options is data files, just tick the mods you wish to activate. Then just load your save and play away until you get want more. The main advantage of fomm is that everything gets put together in the same folders eg Data/meshes and one advantage is that it automates the removal process. You should be able to install new mods with any hastle but the more you add the more cluttered your directory becomes and uninstalling mods manually often requires a clean install. Using fomm I would try and activate it with just the main fallout .ems activated, then if that work try to find which mod is causing the crash. Awesome specs on your rig

I have done it both ways. Actually I just got my first mod working. I did all of the abouve that i mentioned and the conraid radio mod worked. However after restarting the game with the alice mad active the game is crashing to the descktop agian as soon as I start it up...so alice is bugged or something. so now even after un-checking all the mods in both the splash screen for fallout launcher in the data option and through the mod manager the game still crashes. So once agian a full un-install and re-install.Question- can i just install the mod manager into the FO3 dir and thats it...just use the mod manager? and ty so much for responding abominalmonkey
bben46
installing manually...just for my own retarded-ness....does this mean just unzip a mod and drag and drop into the data folder inthe FO3 dir? then thats it? Yup that's about it. for most mods. Be sure to read the documentation with each mod to see if there is anything different though. I'm always amazed at how complicated some people can make it. Your description of how to install a mod is about as simple as it gets.

bben46
FOMM is not a mod. It is a utility program and does not install like a mod. It also requires that the windows update .net 2.0 be installed first, and may need a .net 3.0 patch also - you get that from the windows update site. After installing FOMM you no longer use the Fallout launcher to start the game. Instead start Fallout using the FOMM launcher which is located in C:\...\Fallout3\Fomm\Fomm.exe and NOT in the data folder. Here is the install instructions if you couldn't find them, they are kind of hidden in the zipped folders. Manual Install==============First extract the .7z archive to a location of your choice. (Which presumably you've already done, or you wouldn't be reading this. :P) Make sure you keep the directory structure intact. If you only have a single, retail DVD install of fallout 3 you can run fomm from anywhere; the only restriction is that it needs to be somewhere that it has write access to. If you have multiple installations, or you are running a downloaded version of fallout from D2D or steam, you will need to either install fomm into the same directory as the fallout3.exe of the game you want to run it with, or manually edit the settings.xml file to add the node '<strValue name="FalloutDir">add the full path to your fallout directory here</strValue>'. If fomm crashes on startup with a generic windows error then you likely have a problem with your .NET installation; fomm requires .NET 2.0 to run. Among the other third party gunk that the fallout 3 installer installs alongside the actual game is the original prepatched version of .NET 3.0, which under some circumstances can cause .NET 2 applications to break. In this case visiting windows update and installing the .NET 3 patch it offers you is sufficient to get fomm working. Help on the actual usage of fomm is available from the wiki at http://fomm.wiki.sourceforge.net/, which is also available from inside fomm by clicking 'help' on the plugins list. johnynumonic2004
I have a compleatly up to date computer....net is fully up to date as well as all drivers. UAC in win 7 is turned off. I run all programs as admin. As stated in post I have a retail DVD game of the year addition and do a clean install. The game runs fine. As soon as I install FOMM which i know is not a mod but a game mod installer/helper the game wont load from the fomm launcher or from the splash itself. I dont even load a mod in it and it crashes the game. I have read in many places that all one needs is FOMM to run most mods for this game. Iam trying to stay simple as the mods Iam interested in atm are just small stuff..clothes..a few guns...maybe a ammo mod. This is day 3 of trying to get a mod working. I run in a circle and end up in the same spot. I am computer literate and have modded many games and been around a time or two but have never been this deep in it where it seems there are 50 ways to mod this game and a million people who do it 50 different ways but all use the same 3-4 tools. I still have not got a direct understanding of what I am modding...the data folder in the actual fallout dir...or the folder in the my doc's folder....nor do I understand why 3 things need to be loaded before a mod can run. Why is there a mod manager if it doesnt manage the mods....I install the game via the mod managers instructions...I do all that it says and it doesnt work so..I guess...games in the garbage at this point...but ty to all who have tried to help. neomonkeus
Since you are running a similar setup to me in regards OS, and likewise have UAC disabled ensure you installing to the default directory path. That might make it easier for FOMM to detect but I cant understand why you are having such a problem with the CTD. If not try downloading an earlier version as there maybe a bug in the newest release. Also here is a manual method of installing FOMM near the bottom Link Excuse the Noob title in the name. johnynumonic2004
ok another update..I do this to maybe help others so here it is.I have 3 top notch comps..1 running max mem with win xp home edition and a ati gpu. all 3 are quad core machines all are well above system needs for every game out especilly FO3. so. I made sure the other 2 are fully updated in all needs.system 1= win 7 64 bit- clean instal of fo3 goty-patched it-wont launch.system 2= win vista 32 bit- clean install of the same-patched it-works but tried to load DLC and after wont work.system 3= win xp home edition 64 bit- clean install as above- patched it- added dlc- works fine. after much investigation....windows 7 32 or 64 bit will not except the patch 1.7 for fallout 3. on my machine anyways. as I am typing this the games running in my second monitor on windows 7 64 bit machine. I cant patch it tho as it will crash at the end of the patch pross. as most mods say you need to have it patched I guess Iam out of luck. on this machine I also decided to just install FOMM...no mods...I installed FOMM and the game crashes...lol when I say crash I mean every time in the same manner...launch...black screen with a little blue circle...a pinch of sound and boom desktop. so....I guess I either hit the win xp machine...or stay on this one and have no DLC and mods...lol. ty agian to all. neomonkeus
Tell us how you get on with the XP version. I have a 32bit xp machine and have no problems. Really surprised by the patch crashing out like that on the Win 7 64bit. Thinking about it now the Goty version might be prepatched. On the main screen there should be a version number, check that to ensure you are not patching to the same version. Also try another version of FOMM if it doesnt work on your XP rig
