Fallout 3 hangs

Hi,

I have just purchased FO3 GOTY pack with the 5 DLC. The game installed okay (I did get a warning about C++) and the DLC cd took forever to read and install. But they worked. However when I try to start a new game it starts and then freezes. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del and get out. I get the following messages from Event viewer:

Error

The program Fallout3.exe version 1.7.0.3 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel. Process ID: 1460 Start Time: 01cb2956fb55f453 Termination Time: 24

I have the following system:

Intel Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz

4GB Ram

Onboard Realtek HD sound

Nvidia 9800 GTX

Vista 32 bit with SP1

Any ideas? I have searched around and nothing works. It appear to be a problem with GFWL.

Thanks

Games for Windows LIVE disabler, it'll most likely fix your problem. Follow the readme, especially when it comes to moving around your DLCs.

There are a LOT of useful utilities here on FO3Nexus. I suggest downloading them. Especially FOMM (Fallout mod manager) and FOSE (Fallout script editor).

Good luck!

EDIT: the solution posted in this thread may also help you.

Thank you for that but still no luck.

I have re-installed FO3 and then patched it back up to 1.7 (I loaded each patch in order). I set the graphics to Low, ran the GFWL disabler and ran the game out of FOMM. Still no luck. I still get the same error messages and a new one.

Information

The Desktop Window Manager did not start because an analysis of the hardware and configuration indicated that it would perform poorly

Any ideas? I am completly stuffed here. I am thinking about formating and putting Vista back on.

What type of video card do you have? And have you installed the latest drivers?

The desktop manager not starting because it would run poorly sounds like Win 7 doesn't recognize the capabilities of your video card.

Thought you had Win 7 since you said you were thinking of reformatting and putting Vista back on. My fault, I misunderstood.

If you go into device manager is your video card actually listed by name? A 9800 GTX should be able to run the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.,exe) with no problems. And is most definitely ok to run FO3 with.

Where did you install Fallout 3?

How much memory does your computer have?

The video card is a just listed as a Nvidia card . I installed FO3 onto another parition, though I am not sure were the DLC went. I have 4GB of ram.

The sad thing is that FO3 ran about 2 years ago fine. I sold that version and decided I wanted to do it again in a different way.

If all it says for you video card is "Nvidia" and nothing else then the system has not detected your card right.

What is your windows experience score for your graphics card? Right click on my computer, click properties, then click Windows Experience Index.

Which driver did you download from nvidia.com?

My windows experience score is 1.0.

The driver was 258.96_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_english.

The score is 1 for your graphics card? Or for the whole system? I'd definitely try to reinstall the driver at this point. A 9800 GTX shouldn't be giving a score that low.
