modsec
30 mins to an hour.... thats how long my game lasts before it crashes. Although I don't know if theres anything that'll help it, I've used Boss to sort the stuff. Although idk how to bash things so that may be an issue. I have disable my weather mod, Unique landscapes Comp and Open cities. I crash anywhere from 30 mins to an hour due to im guessing memory errors as i run around on my horse. Any ideas? Megatarius
Welcome to this game. Windom Earle's Crash Prevention System only works for some crashes. There's nothing you can do except save often and possibly limit your horseback trips. modsec
Thanks. Also, I don't whether that was a smart remark or a misconception, but i have been playing Elderscrolls games since Daggerfall(i didn't believe the arena and other predecessors were worth much) and oblivion since day one. I know what crash prevention system prevents and does not prevent. And, As is the typical thing to do of any person who does not know what his/her problems solution is. I researched the Problem and then i came and asked for second opinions on what might be causing it. So... it is apparent to me that either there is no discernible reason for why it is crashing and it is simply that Oblivion is unstable(as always) or that people simply are people and don't wish to bother themselves with others misfortune. Now that that is out of the way. Thank you, for the Link and the reply. PostScript: I had already enabled more ram usage on the .exe file.
yeldarb
Use the Unofficial Patches for your DLC's and Knights (TESNexus php?id 9969) It is an OMOD and may fix some issues with your game. You might want to try Wrye Bash, it is very useful and everyone who does use it regrets not learning to use it sooner. chaospearl
You didn't mention what kind of computer system you have... that can make a difference if your machine is older, or if it's middle of the road and you're loaded down with mods. Oblivion is a very unstable game to begin with and the more mods you run, the less stable it becomes. Until recently I played Oblivion on a laptop (a pretty good one, but still) and I was running over 200 mods. My game crashed every half an hour. Nothing I could do about it no matter how much load order rearranging I did. There was no one specific thing causing the crashes, nothing in particular I had set wrong or loaded incorrectly. Just that running a ton of mods in an unstable game on a less than fabulous computer = frequent crashing.
bben46
Here is a link to Bben's Crash Helphttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=298. If it is consistent in when it crashes, It could also be heat related. Or it could be related to the amount of RAM used as Oblivion with mods tends to use RAM up and not release it back properly and it WILL run out of RAM eventually and crash no matter what you do. A common problem for me when I was using XP was background programs that wanted to do something at a set interval, such as an IM program that checked for new messages at a given interval. If the background process held onto the CPU for too long, Oblivion could not recover. Win7 has been much better in this respect.
chaospearl
I just noticed that you said you crash normally when riding your horse. That makes me think it may be some kind of audio-related problem. You're not using onboard sound, are you? A ton of people have trouble with incredibly slow FPS and crashes when riding horses because of the hoofbeat sound that has to play 8 billion times repeatedly while you ride. If your sound card isn't a good one or you're using onboard sound, that's very likely your problem. Just tossing it out as a suggestion. If that IS the problem, try a mod called Quiet Feet MAX. It disables the sound from four-legged animals' hooves\paws (Oblivion processes those sounds in a much less efficient manner than it does humanoid footfall sounds, for some unknown reason, and that's what causes the problems) and it can bring a MAJOR improvement to your game if that is indeed what the problem is. Edit: Here's the link -- Quiet Feet MAX and while I'm at it, here's a link to the OMOD conversion data for the mod, to make it easier to install \ uninstall. Edit more: I do not know your level of computer knowledge, so I think I should clarify my statements regarding the problems Oblivion has with onboard sound. I apologize if this is obvious to you. Others may be reading this thread to learn from it, too. "Onboard sound" is when you don't have a separately installed sound card and the audio on your computer comes from whatever sound capability is embedded on the motherboard. It's also sometimes called "integrated" sound, whereas a separate sound card is a "dedicated" card. If you're using onboard sound, it means your poor CPU has to process all the audio Oblivion throws at it, in addition to the AI and scripts and assorted other resource-sucking processes. Whereas if you have a dedicated sound card, even if it's not such a hot one, the card takes over the work of audio processing. That is a serious relief on the CPU and frees it up significantly. It is particularly relevant to Oblivion because, as I stated, the game processes hoofbeat sounds differently than it processes footsteps. I do not know why; perhaps someone more technically inclined has figured out the reason. I do know the processing of hoofbeats -- or to be more precise, the footfall sounds of any creature with four legs -- requires more work from the computer than footsteps do. On top of that, when you are riding your horse the hoofbeat sound plays constantly, repeating over and over at a very rapid pace. If there is no dedicated sound card, it can cause the entire game to slow and stutter because the CPU is pushed to its limits, valiently ensuring that you get to hear every single ringing hoofbeat on the cobblestones. The end result is that for anyone whose computer relies on onboard sound, the purchase of even a reasonably priced $25 Sound Blaster card will make a noticable and possibly drastic difference in the game's performance. You will see much improved FPS, less stuttering, and far fewer random crashes not only when riding your horse but in any areas where there are horses, or for that matter any four-legged creatures.
