How do you change the author and description text of esp and esm?

Recommended Posts

Some information please. What is it you are trying to do and where? Give us an example to see what you are trying to do.

Change the author's name of a mod? Why? Are you trying to take credit for someone elses work?

esp and esm s are usually only a part of a mod and not the entire mod.

Fair enough.

You can check out the mod I'm making: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33259.

As I started messing with Lem's meshes, building roads/bridges/etc, I found that I could only get them to show up in game if I used the esp that was made specifically for his meshes, otherwise if I try to use a newly made esp, the objects wouldn't appear in the game.

So all I did was delete the script, and two interiors that were in the esp, renamed it, and went on making my mod. The only part I haven't been able to change is the author and description text for the esp. Lem made the meshes yes, and will be fairly credited when I get to the readme, or if someone has a problem with me not crediting him immediatly, but he is not the one that built the structures you can see in the pics I uploaded of my mod.

So ummm, is that enough info?

The simplest way is with wrye bash, in the mod window. Highlight the esp or esm that you wish to change the description for. You will see the author and description to the right hand side of the window. Edit them there. Below those edit fields you can see two buttons, Save and Cancel. Remember to hit Save or your changes will not be written.

I change them all the time for various reasons:

* because it says DEFAULT and blank

* because I want to add the current version number of the mod

* because I changed something for my game and want to make it distinguishable from the original (and have a note of what/why I changed it).

* or because I'm updating someone else's mod (w/permission) and want credit too

All perfectly fine reasons to me. :teehee:

Thanks for the tip.

Edit, (after installing wryebash), no luck here. Wrye Bash won't work for me. Is there any other way to do what I have asked about?

Seriously, going through the wryebash thing can't be the only way to do this, can it?

And how do you even add the author name and description text to an esm or esp when you first make one anyway?

If you can't use Wrye Bash the other way to do it is when you select Data Files in the CS before you load the editor. Select your esp and on the right is a space for the name which is "default" if unchanged. If you have any other mods and they have descriptions added, this is where you'll see it as well.

The space below the name is for adding text and when you load your esp (make it active) and then save the text will remain. You can also change the text anytime you make changes to your esp if necessary.

I read somewhere once that some people have the CS crash after adding names and descriptions, but it's never happened to me. I can't see why adding a name and description would cause a problem, but you never know I suppose.

I can't make the CS change mod descriptions because it crashes. So I use TES4Gecko. Just click on the "Edit Description" box and type in the information. (You may not have the File>Data window open in the CS while doing this operation.)
