Having an issue with 'footstep' noises

I'm having an issue with my Oblivion (yes, it is indeed highly modified, but this problem has been around since before i discovered the world of mods) in which it blips for a second any time certain creatures take a step, namely deer, horses, and sheep. this causes a lot of framerate issues when i am surrounded by these creatures. The music skips and the game locks up for a fraction of a second anytime their feet touch the ground. Any and all help is appreciated.

It sounds like you have an on-board sound card.

Install Quiet Feet MAX - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=stabilization_and_optimization_mods

Turn down Hardware Acceleration for Sound in the Dxdiag menus and/or

Apply some on-board sound tweaks - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=oblivion_ini_tweaks

while I've never heard the term 'on-board soundcard', im assuming you mean that my soundcard is just a chipset inside the machine that was built with it. in this case, yes, it is.

Basically. On-board sound means that your sound hardware is integrated into your motherboard. It's the equivalent of integrated video versus a separate video card, but with sound cards. That is pretty much standard. On-board sound can be fairly nice these days too. The importance for gaming is that it takes a load off of the CPU, which, without a separate card, processes all of the sound. That is why turning off hardware acceleration (the culprit of the popping and crackling) and reducing the number of sounds processed (impacts) helps. There are lots of sounds, so you can see how the effect would be so tremendous. Even a power house of a CPU, such as an i7 Bloomfield that enthusiasts might run, benefit from having that separate sound card in the case. The more breathing room the CPU has, the better, period.
